Vette(s): 1969 Corvette Stingray Convertible. Just bought it from my uncle who owned it since 1971. Fathom green, green interior. 350/300, T400.

There's alot of play in my steering, and I'm pretty sure it's coming from the box. I adjusted it as much as possible with little improvement. I'm considering several things and would like some advice.

1) On Ebay there's a company that sells rebuilt ones for C3's for $114, the only downside is my car is completely numbers matching, how many different casting #'s are there? Also, costs a little to send my original to them for a core then pay s/h on the new one too.

2) Rebuild kit and do it myself. I noticed kits for around $80. I'm pretty mechanical, so I don't think it's too much of a problem, I've done it on old mustang boxes and they look almost the same.

3) In Ecklers they have a rebuild kit that's around $270 (I think) It offers a new worm gear with quicker ratio, 16:1, it says however that some machining may be required, so that will be even more $. What's the original ratio? Is it worth all that for the quicker ratio?

Any advice is greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Matt

Are you sure the "rag-joint" isn't causing the extra play?
If you can handle the rebuild yourself, that's the way I would go.

It's not the rag joint, I already relpaced it.

Vette(s): 1975 C3 Red, T-Tops, Black Interior. All I need is time and money! Getting there!
Just keep in mind it's a recirculating ball sector.  Those balls can be a challange if you're not prepared to deal with them.  If you are, the rebuild is not really that bad.
