Topic: Steering pump replacement

Here I go again another question !!!!
I have to replace my steering pump and this means the core has to be returned, but before i do it and to make my car steer i need to remove the old pulley from the old pump, so far i have broken one wrench trying to remove the hex bolt from the middle of the pulley and it has got me wondering is it a left hand thread and has anyone out there successfully removed their pump pulley, do i have to use heat or should i just give up and buy a new pulley ?

Your pump has a nut holding the pully on?

I think the pullies are press-fit on these pumps, but perhaps yours has been changed before?
If it does actually have a retaining nut, an impact wrench is the way to go to get the nut off. It will be a regular right-hand thread.
Does the center of the shaft have a female, hex fitting? Like something you would put an "Allen" wrench in, or is it threaded? I think the pulley is a pressed on set-up, and you might need a puller to get if off. Maybe I'm cornfused!(who...ME?!)

No, Joel, it's not you .
The bolt is only for INSTALLING the pully. Once in place, there is no need of the bolt, and in fact it should not be there.
The pully is pressed on. A special puller is required to remove the pully. You can rent one from AutoZone or similar parts store. It's fairly easy to do. Installing the new pully can be done with the tool, if it's a full puller set. Or just lube the install bolt and washer and tighten it down until the surface of the pully is flush with the surface of the shaft. Then remove the bolt. If you don't lube the bolt first, it can bind and cause difficulty installing the pully.

a lot of interesting input, i guess it may well have been replaced in the past, i have a three leg puller(now now no dirty thoughts !) which i am sure is up to th task, but i assumed (maybe wrongly) that the Hex/Allen bolt has to be removed first ???

I'm guessing if you look very close at that Allen, you may see that it's actually part of the shaft, and not really a nut at all. Some of them had this style. The allen was to help when working on the pump itself, not just a replacement.

As usual you guys are amazing and without your input it would have taken me a lot longer to figure it out, the Hex/Allen socket i was looking at was part of the shaft, which would explain why i couldn't undo it and why i broke a wrench trying !!!, of course the workshop manual didn't help me there, I took your advice KSTYER and went to my local Autozone and rented the puller etc (Free) once i had the puller it took me all of 2 minutes to get it off and it only took that long because i needed to have a beer break half way through.
Once again THANK YOU (especially KYSTER) you are restoring my faith in mechanics (well almost)
I can see next problem will have to be harder you guys are getting too good !!!!
