has anyone tried to remove the ball stud from the steering push rod on a nonpowersteering car,,does the little end cap and spring have to come off? Mine seems to be scored up as if some idiot beat on the end of the shaft in the past. Help<RD

Rick, the stud may not be replacable. If the end of the rod, where the "cap" is has a slot across it, with a cotter pin going thru to hold the cap on, then the cap will screw off.(unless that's where Bubba has been hammerin...then you may have a problem!)
If the cap will screw out, then you can remove the spring, and the ball seat. The ball should come out then.
If the cap will not come off, for whatever reason, and the ball/seat is worn out, replacement of the arm is your only option. Some of the earlier cars did not have replacable ball studs.
