Currently undergoing a frame-off resto. and modifications.YEEHAW!!!
Howdy- It's really not that hard-just a little time consuming, being that you're so careful and a perfectionist when it comes to your vette, no wait, that's me. It's really easy.
First, start by going under the dash, beneath the steering column, remove any crap to get to the alignment bolts on the underside of the column, LOOSEN them 3/4 out, then go to the end of the column, and remove the 3 bolts connecting the column to the firewall. This gives you the play to move the column.
In the engine compartment, go to the rag joint, pay close attention to how the column is lined up, then start removing one of the two bolts on either side of the joint.(12-point 7/16 wrench works the best). When you have a bolt out, open the separation on the shaft with a prybar, enough to slide the joint off, It's best to have a helper pull the steering wheel back for you until one side of the joint slides off, but you can do it yourself. Now, take care of the other side, it's the easy side now.
Assembly is simple if you can get that far. Pay attention to how it's lined up going together, as this will incredibly affect your alignment. If you drive down the road, and your steering wheel isn't pointing straight, you misaligned the joint. Also, just for the hell of it, an alignment isn't too bad to do after the job is done. Good luck, man.
DON'T USE THE "HELP" OR MOTORMITE RAG JOINT REPAIR KIT!!! THE QUALITY IS SUBSTANDARD. Any of the fine Corvette parts companies sells a quality replacement kit.

Gribble123 is right. It is an easy task. The two bolts holding the joint together are sized differently so getting them misaligned is not usually a problem. I found that removing one of the bolts on the steering box was easier than loosening the steering column. Either way you can separate the joint to get the job done. I bought my replacement rag joint from the local Chevy dealer.
