Replaced the steering box last weekend and decided to go ahead and replace the flexible coupling(rag joint) as well.  Now the steering wheel is off about an 1/8th turn and the key will not go to the lock position and the steering wheel is not locking out.  Have I messed up the ignition box alignment or is it in the column itself??  Any help will be appreciated.

Did you have your steering wheel unlocked when you changed the rag joint ? I am pretty sure the lock is up in the top of the column ,you should be able to lock the wheel where you want it and reinstall the rag joint so its lined up correctly

I will check that.  I probably had it loose to be able to turn it some to get to the bolts and to move it around to install the new joint.

Found the problem.  There is a lever on the column just outside the firewall with a cable to the transmission to keep the key from being turned off in reverse.  This cable has been gone since I had the car.  I called my mechanic and he said I probably knocked that lever down as I was working the column.  He was right.  I reached down and pulled it up and sure enough, I could turn off the key and lock the steering wheel.

just a fast question (or two) on the rag joints. can anyone tell me why the different rag joint for a manual steering car than one with power steering. is the one for manual built stronger and would it be able to be used on a power steering setup?
