I have just started the install of the Steeriods Rack in a 1972 vette, with power steering, my problem seems to be that the intermediate shaft is about an 1" to short, the shaft is 5 5/16" long, does anybody know if the shaft should be longer or what else could be causing this problem?
The steering column seems to be as far forward as possible. Any other adjustments that can be made or is the shaft just to short.
And just my luck Speeddirect tech support is not available by phone until Oct 24. only email support I believe once a day.
THX John

I installed mine on a 79. No length issues but I could measure from point to point for you when I get home tonight. I believe the kit is the same for all C3s. Maybe that will help isolate the issue...

Great THX, My shaft has splines on each end of it...and all the pics I have looked at, show a round shaft with a flat spot at each end for the set screws without splines. Maybe this is an update or for some other style of car????

I installed mine in a 77 no problems. the shat on mine installed as best i can measure is 5". these are the differences in the kits
  • 1963-1966 take a 3/4" U-Joint at the steering column, where 1967-1982 take a 1" U-Joint at the steering column.
  • 1963-1979 small block kits have a pressure power steering hose with a different phase angle than the big block pressure hose.
  • 1980-1982 have their own pressure power steering hose.I could take a picture of that area if it would help, my steering column from the fire wall to the spline is 6 3/4"

I measure about 5 1/4 on the splined shaft and 8'' overall at yoke to yoke that mates to the shaft. Hard to measure the shaft after it`s installed. Also measured 6'' of steering shaft end back to plate at firewall.Mine is a 72

THX for the replies... my shaft over all length is 5 5/16" from end to end including the splines. If your shaft is 8" over all length...then mine is to short. Is your measurment  from the inside yoke to inside yoke before the set screws? or overall length of the shaft? My steering shaft is also 6" to the firewall. I guess maybe they sent me the wrong shaft.

Well I lengthened the shaft about 1" by cutting the shaft on a 45 slid it apart 1" added a piece in the angled center and Alum welded and filled remaining areas, good and strong but not as strong as the original but will have to do for now until I can get a replacement when Steeriods open again.
Kool72...  but I am still not sure on the proper measurement can you let me know.

THX for all the replies and info

It fits, just had the alignment done, steers beeeeautiful.
I received an email from Steriods...he said to put the flex coupler back on and hammer the factory steering shaft away from the firewall to lengthen the shaft he seem to figure that the shaft was a slide two piece?????
But mine measured the same as Kool72 What do you think?????

I will still check with Steriods when they open to get to the bottom of this issuse and see if they have a shaft this length.
THX for all the help and great info

As mentioned above its hard to measure once installed. However mine is probably 5 and 5/16" just like Yours. I can Measure the Distance between the Splines wich is 3.70 Inches.

THX for the info, I have no idea why mine is to short with all the same measurements. Weather was great here today so I went out for a 2.5 hour cruise....Everybody was right...What a difference in the handling, makes the driving so much more fun...
    THX again
