Has anyone found one tire brand/style better than another for an 80 Vette? I think they originaly came with Goodyear Eagle GT. The replacement from Goodyear is Eagle GT2. I have Dunlops with 56K on them that need replacing. They have worn evenly, but I have nothing to compare to. I am considering the Goodyear Eagle GT2. |cool|

Hey Bernie,
I have the GT2's P255/60R-15 on the '81...and I'm not very impressed with them. Dry roads they are great, damp or wet roads, forget it. I almost lost complete control of my car a few times, and I was driving normal. So now the car stays in the garage on rainy days. The suspension and wheel alignment is perfect on the car so I can't blame it on that. I even think that they wear pretty fast considering the few miles a year that get put on the car. When this set is slightly wore to half life (soon) I will be switching over to BFG's like Normand's car. This is merely my experience/opinion with these tires.

I never had much luck with GY's. Always thought they were over priced too. I kept the stock size , P225 70R-15 on my 76 but went with the BFG T/A's. Nice tire. Also heard Firestone makes a good tire...

I can't agree more with Norsky ,these types of topics can be very helpful in determining your final choice of product . Also a little research will give you some very helpful information on just how the various tires out there behave in a number of road conditions . There are ratings available for wet or dry conditions and also the type of wear that you can expect from your purchase . Lets keep the info coming , I am running the BFG tires at this time.

Ok..I will be the ''fly in the ointment''.

When I bought ''Rosie'' she had Dunlops..what a POS tire....fine on dry roads..but wet...no control...hydroplaning!!

So went with Michelins.

They got GREAT mileage!!(In fact could have put more miles on them but went to the 17 inch wheels)

With the 17inch wheels.....went with Michelins Pilots. I know they don't have a high ratings...but... I talked Hubby into putting them on his C4...he has gotten 50k out of them...and decided he liked them better than the Firestones...He is on his 2nd set.

Last summer it was time to replace the tires on my 80. I did a lot of checking and went with the BFG 255-60-15 TA's. As soon as I got the car on the road I knew I had made the right choice. The car felt like it had a whole new suspension. They seam fine in the rain although I don't push it in the rain and try not to drive it in the rain any more that I have to,but one can't count on the weather. One note, when you have the tires mounted take them to a place that does high speed balacing, and slip the guy doing the balacing a few bucks and let him know you need a good job done on balacing. Believe me balacing makes a big differance in ride.

Thanks Glenn

On my '78, I just about to put on P255/60R15 BFG TA Radials. Has anyone ever tried these? I was quoted an installed price of $485, which seems reasonable. Right now, my car still has the factory Goodyears on it and I want to store them.

Thanks,
Franc

I hope you didn't buy these yet!!
You can get them from TireRack.com for $72 each + $38 shipping (or $326 total). Then you just have to add on Mounting and Balancing, and even at $20 per tire, brings you to $406 -- You'll save at least 80 bucks this way! I have used TireRack before, and they are fast and cheap!
Let me know what you do!

By the way, I recommend that FLA VETTE and anyone else looking for tires check out TireRack.com!
