Time for new tires on my '81...Goodyear Eagle GT's are a little pricey...is anyone familiar with Pep Boy's Futura GLS tires? All 4 mounted, balanced, etc. for about $275...more in my price range! Are they decent? I believe they are 50,000 mile tires. Any other recommendations that are reasonable? Thanks, Randy. |wavey|

Depends on what you want...pure performance or balance of ride, handling and long wear. Dollar for dollar I like the BFG Radial T/A. That's what I have on my '78. On my '69 I wanted whitewalls as that's what the original window sticker says it came with so I chose Cooper Touring tires. I believe the Pep Boys Futura tire is made by Cooper, which says a lot about it as a quality tire.

Whatever you choose is likely a far better tire than what was original equipment on the car.

I spent countless hours deciding this, I looked on tirerack.com, compared prices and specs for hours on the bfgoodrich radial t/a and the firestone firehawk indy 500. I finally just called tirerack, they said the firestone will last longer, handle better, an has better traction, and it was 5 bucks cheaper per tire. Needless to say i went with the firestones, they handle great. I paid 67 per tire. Just my 2 cents......

I gotta go with the flow here! I ran the Goodrich tires on a '73 that my boys and I put a lot of hard miles on. They held up well and performed! Price was competitive for the performance.

Had Goodyear Eagle GT 2's. They can keep 'em. I almost piled up my car with those tires in the rain. And I was driving like an old lady. I took 'em off with better than half life left on them. Never again. BF Goodrich T/A Radials are on the car. No problems what so ever. Good all around tire in my book. Tire's are cheaper than a car. So a few dollars extra shouldn't even be an issue in my opinion.

The T/A is quite good, and has been for years. But the research I have done seem to indicate the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 is a bit better in every catagory. That's what I bought. For the rare times I have driven my car, I like them quite a bit.

Thanks to all of you! That's the really great thing about this forum...everyone seems to be ready with information and willing to share. I made calls, did some negotiating, and are having my new Firestone Firehawks mounted later today. Got them for just a few bucks more than the Pep Boys brand. Still within my budget. Thanks again to all and keep it up! Randy |rollysmile|

If it were me I would go with the Goodrich tires (owned by Michelin). If you choose to buy the Futura from Pep Boys make sure you get all of the costs up front. (they charge for everything) I am running Coker redlines that are Goodrich and they make the 76 ride and handle pretty decent. |thumb|

Sears quoted me $409 for a set of the T/A's 225/70's
What kind of prices are you guys seeing? That sounded about 50 bucks high to me.
I'd love to put the red lines on, but they're double the price!
