Original equipment for my 1980 is the Good Year but don't seem to have a great reating from other user opinions on tire sites. The BF Goodrich seem to have a better rating but are not original equipment.
I like the idea of originality (or as close to it as possible).
Any thoughts?

I have been real happy with BFGs in the past and have them on both "The Toy" and "BIGBRRD". Almost put them on "The Beast" but my bride wanted to go with GYs so that's what went on it (it is her car after all).

If you haven't done so already check out Tire Rack's website. They have some good reviews and ratings on tires.

I had BFG's on the '78 I owned and thought they were excellent tires. From what I understand they can be a bit difficult to find now as BFG doesn't make them on a continual basis.
On a different car I bought a set of Cooper Cobra's...they also seem to be an excellent tire. The Cobra name on them tends to irk the Ford guys!

Firestone's FireHawk Indy 500's are great tires and a great price also. I got mine from Tire Rack. Ratings show it far above the Good Year's, and the BFG's. Just my option.

I liked the BFGs I had years ago.
I know several members here have had less than stellar performance with the GYs.
I have the Firestone's FireHawk Indy 500's like DaveM. I think they are a little noiser than the prior tires, but they were well worn when I took them off.
It really depends on what kind of driving you plan to do and how committed to originality you are.
Check to see if you can even get the GYs.

I've never liked Goodyears on my 4x4's, but love the Eagle GT II on my Pacer. I'll be replacing my

Eagle GT II's from the Tire rack when I need them.

BFG's for me.
Almost piled up the vette with GT II's. Was on wet pavement and driving like an old lady. I hated to toss a new set of tires, but the cost of my car outweighed that cost factor.
My .02 cents

I echo the crowd too. BFG's for me, I had my 1st set as All Terrain then Mud Terrain, now Coker Classics on the Blacray. (BFG makes them.) Nice ride, quite, no performance issues.
