After work today I removed the pass. side trailing arm on my 77.The pivot bolt came out with just a light tap of a hammer...no rust anywhere. Now my confidence is sky high because everything on this car has come apart easily..wrong! With the whole assembly on my work bench,I removed the 1 1/16 castle nut then the spindle flange..no effort so far. I have several different instruction sheets, etc. for the spindle removal,I didn't care for the one that said"beat it till it comes off.So, I put it in my 10 ton press and this thing will not budge!Am I missing something? I see no other bolts to remove till I get inside this thing. My press has bent out of shape the hollow square end of the trailing arm a bit( end I wasn't watching),so I'll get another somewhere down the road.Anyone know If I'm doing anything wrong? Thanks,Mikee.

Hi Mike
When I did my rear suspension I had the trailing arms rebuilt by van steel, so I am of no help. Anybody have info for him?

You really need to remove the spindle support from the t-arm!! You will definitely bend the sheet metal trailing arm if you try to press that bugger apart like that.
If your rotors are not riveted, remove them from the spindle/hub, and you'll see there are four bolts with nuts on them sticking thru the front side of the spindle support. Remove the nuts, and then separate the spindle support from the t-arm. Once you have the support off, it will be much easier to press the bearing assembly apart.
There are "special" tools made for the pressing of the spindle from the support, but I've always managed without them. Just use caution, and make sure the support is properly supported, so it doesn't snap on ya.

Sounds like it was worth the money I spent on the reconditioned TA's ..... Old ones off!... new ones on !
Hi Joel, Thanks for the reply, but I'm still in the dark. The rotors were removed weeks ago.Now all I see is e brake shoes.I thought that after spindle was pressed out,the four bolts for support arm got removed at that time.I don't see access to the four bolts till the spindle is removed. What am I missing?

The bolts go all the way thru the support, and thru the t-arm. Depending on which way they were installed, the nuts will be on the t-arm side, or the spindle/hub side, but they are there. You can normally get to the nuts/bolts from the t-arm side, and the same on the spindle side. Once the nuts are off, the entire spindle support slides off of the t-arm. It may take a little penetrant to help separate the two, tho.
I may have an '"exploded" view of the assembly here somewhere, that may help with the visual aspect. I'll look, and post it this eve. I gotta head out for the dungeon now...hi-ho, hi-ho, don't cha know?

Lukes Vet....I called "Jim" at the reccomended E Bay site. What a very nice guy to talk with.I told him I could not remove splindle with my 10 ton press,he said they get that way at times. He suggested I heat the spindle while it is in the press under pressure. It is a press fit and nothing else is holding it in place.

Good Luck! I had mine rebuilt by the local vette shop I was all gung ho about doing it myself until I realized what a PITA it was. Not something I would want a do-over on if I screwed it up. Can you snap some pictures?
79,r...I take more pictures while I work then Hollywood! But I have never tried posting any, sorry. However let me tell you all of my progress, mistakes so others can learn.I came home today and put arm in my press with some pressure.I then put the torch down around base of spindle near inner bearing. This was after I removed the dust cover. As I heated I applied more pressure.I knew I was boogerin the threads on the spindle, but this thing has to come apart! After about 10 min. of heat and pressure this spindle broke free with a BANG,which I knew was going to happen....all is good,ALMOST.The threads on the spindle are shot and the now disassembled T/arm is bent from the pressure. So those are 2 pcs. I will have to find.Hopefully and with more caution I won't have same trouble on drivers side, which came out very easily today
