The vet had been sitting for a couple of weeks as I am working on fixing the driver side door handle. As soon as I pulled out of the driveway and turned the steering wheel I heard a horrible sound, like rusty metal grinding. I continued to drive around the block. The sound was less when turning at speed, but when I slowed and turned the sound came back again.
Any ideas? Please help.

First thing that comes to mind would be power steering pump.
Does it make this noise at idle?
Is it when turning the steeering?
Dis it change when applying the breaks?

Does it make this noise at idle? I did notice a strange whine when warming it up. However it disappeared when applying gas at idle.
Is it when turning the steeering? Yes!
Dis it change when applying the breaks? Not that I noticed.

Will it make this noise sitting still, while turning the steering wheel, engine running, or do you have to actually be moving?
If it's only while moving, I'd be looking at the wheel bearings in the front, or a brake caliper loose/rubbing.
What rims do you have on it?

Life got CRAZY. Been a while and the poor vet has just been sitting.
Fired it up today to investigate a bit further. The noise/whine occurs anytime I turn the steering wheel, moving or not. Does this help?
Adam I have the slotted rims

Sounds like the pump, check your fluid level, if it is down on fluid check for a leak at your lines at the pump and the control valve and cylinder, or at the valve or the cylinder. Sometimes the valve can leak inside...take a pen or pencil and push the ball on the grease fitting inwards and see if you get power steering fliud out of it....sometimes a leak like this makes it look like an outside leak....If fluid is not down or if no leak is found it is more than likely the pump. You can also try a pump fluid flush. acplus 2008-09-24 15:02:21

Mine did that too for a while it ended up being low fluid level and a small power steering leak. Seals were not in great shape, and its a pain in the butt to get down to mine since the cap to fill it is in a horrible spot.
