I agree, most likely the best option. If you carry much more that just your lunch behind the seats than there is'nt much room left for a tire.

I lowered mine down  a few weeks ago because it looked like that 29 year old air shrunk and I wondered the same thing about carrying a flat.

Or, Is it possible that they figured a flat tire on an 8" rim will compress enough to close and latch the tub? It looks like it's made so it can be pushed back up in place with your jack --- maybe?   After all, these cars we be driving ain't Furds.LOL

When I bought my 77 last Labor Day,one of the first things I did was to see if it had a spare. It did and it is a full size, fully inflated tire.So that is where your flat is going.

I'm running a 275/60/15 in the rear & no way it's gonna fit in the carrier. I converted mine to a mini trunk.

I run my '69 with the correct tire size and I have a full size spare in the spare tire carrier fully inflated........no problems to worry about.  Wink  Man, that sucks that you have to carry a donut. Dead

from 78 up chevy changed the spare to a donut size tire, if a regular tire is put in the holder it would not crank up very far and might drag, i'd try it out before i got flat just to see. it would fit on a trunk carrier and have to be tied down, but I'd let out all the air to make it as light as possible.
