I've always had doubts about the value of turning brake rotors just because the stealership says it needs to be done.  I found THIS VIDEO to be very interesting, see what you think.

Our rebuilder has always preached the importance of the final step with the scuffer, but I never knew why.  It sure makes sense.

Yeah...good info, but slightly misleading, imho. Most people I know that do rotors/drums do the non-directional finish to start with....I know I do. Another thing is they did not allow time to seat the pads, or transfer the pad material to the rotors.
It is good info to have, tho, but.....it's old info to those that have been doing it for a while. Most "new" rotors are finish machined on a mill, or grinding wheel, so they have a non-directional finish. You can do the same thing on a brake lathe.

At least you'll have some idea of why the new brakes you spent $xxx on don't seem to work as good as you think they should.

Back in my childhood daysWink I had to turn rotors and drums (remember them). The work was done on a "Anco" lathe. I used the high speed to clean them up and then always used the slow speed for the final finish, and used a anti chatter belt on the center of the rotor. We had no attachment for non- directional back then.
At home I never turn them, If that bad I replace them, so what if you use the rotors with the slots in them? or is that just for cooling?

3M makes a nice little abrasive kit that works great for finishing rotors. It had a drill motor attachment with numeorus abrasive pads, ranging from scotchbrite type pads to sanding disks. They are about 1.5 inches in diameter. They sell them at Walmart in the automotive section. This is the kit that I use to put the finishing touch on  my rotors.
