Hey, What did I do, I change the power steering hoses and when I turn the car on the steering wheel went CRAZY. It went back and forth like it had a mine of it's Owen? Then I turn the car off and heard a clang this can not be good. Did I screw something up?

That was my first thought too mkapp. You can't mix up the hoses to the pump but the ram hoses are both the same size. The easy way to tell is that the pipes coming out of the ram are parallel and when they get to the valve they cross over. The loud clang will have been the ram flying in or out to it's full extent.

I'm presuming the 81 has a valve and ram type unit. I don't know when GM brought the power steering box in.
Ok thats it I did not cross them. So the bottom left goes to top right. Did I do any damge to the car.
Thanks a million for you guys and this web site. THANKS

You're lucky you didn't have your arm stuck thru the steering wheel!! Many a wrist has been broken like that!
The hoses do cross on the control valve...it don't look right, but it is.
You probably didn't so any real damage to anything. Just keep an eye on it for leaks for a while.

Sure wish I'd been there to see that......
I bet after you got it stopped and now that you know you haven't really broke anything , it's pretty funny.....
I agree with Joel, just watch for leaks. To work the air out of the system turn the steering wheels left and right with the engine running and the car lifted if you can. It'll take a few times to get all the air out and make sure you check your fluid level.

You're probably not the first to do it. When rebuilding the valve, there is a HUUUUUGE warning in the kit to keep all body parts out of the way when starting the engine and setting the valve.
Lesson learn't in the joys of owning a C3.
