Hey gang, my 74 has 225/70 15's on it and when I turn the wheel to the extremes either way the tires rub the frame..... not too cool sounding, not too mention they look way too big! these tires practically fill the wheel wells

I am great on rebuilding engines, but a retard when it comes to picking tires....  I was considering BFG radial TA or Firestone Firehawks... but what size would not rub???? but have a width that looks aggressive.....

thanks, jim

You'll git a lot of responses on this one!!!

I have 225/70s on mine, too, but I've never had a rub problem. You may have a spindle stop that is worn, or possibly an alignment issue.

I have P215/70R-15's on my '69 and have no problems at all. I was a bit afraid of going to the 225's as I was concerned your problem might occur. The original equipment tire for '69 was an F70-15. It seems to be an individual car by car thing whether it's an issue or not.

As far as tire brand, I've heard many good things about the Firehawk, though I have no personal experience with them. I have BFG Radial T/A's on my '78 and think they are dollar for dollar about as good as you can find. On my '69 I have Cooper Touring tires...excellent as well, but were a bit more expensive.

There's been lots of discussions here about tires. I think the BFG has a lot of followers for the same reason I stated. A lot of guys like the Firehawks as well. I hear a lot of dissatisfaction with Goodyear...not for quality but the other brands simply seem to make owners happier.

A lot depends on where you buy them and out of pocket costs.

My Monte SS has radial Ta's and they have worn well and handle great....

Adam, the car was just at a local Corvette specialty shop for an alignment and it was fine...

If I were to go with 215/60's this would alleviate the rub issue i suppose, but would there be a noticable drop in clearance?

I am for sure a "brand guy" , once Ive had good luck with a brand, i tend to stick with it... BFG is pretty much all i ever bought, but i like the looks of the firehawks.....

Chevrolet didn't authorize 60 series tires on Corvettes until '78 when they made some fenderwell changes to accomodate the wider tires. If your 225's are rubbing the frame a wider 60 series tires would likely do so as well.

Many owners have mounted 60 series with no problems on pre-'78 C3's, but some have had rubbing problems. Again, a car by car thing.

One question...does your car have wider than the normal 15"x8" wheels mounted or wheels with the wrong offset? If the wheels are aftermarket that may be causing the problem.

Ill have to look as see about the rims, they are rally wheels.... but unsure of thier origin.... Ill check them out tomorrow... but they appear to be stock size...

I thought going from the 225 to a 215 or even a 205 would lessen the overall height of the tire allowing me to go with a 60 series??

maybe its just the tires, they just look huge in the wheel wells.... huge sidewalls....

I have BFG T/As - my favorite tire on my '71 - 225 60's - they touch just a little at full lock to lock. I put up with it to keep the larger tire.

I have Firestone's Firehawk 215/70 and couldn't be happier with them. This is my first experience with the Firehawk but I think they give you a better ride than the BFGs.

As for a tire filling up the entire wheelwell, I like that look.

I also am running BFG T/As but I upsized to 16" wheels and tires keeping pretty close to the original 15" dimensions.  If I'm at full lock and the suspension flexes a little bit there's a slight rub but that's it.

The slightly lower profile is hard to notice from stock but the handling has improved some without losing any ride quality (IMO).
