Hi guys,   I have a problem that I cant seem to get a satisfactory answer to:   There is a rattle under the front only when I hit a bump. I was told that it is because there is only a pin holding brake pad and that it rattles because there is no way to tighten it up.  so if that is the case are there any tricks you guys have to silence the rattle? also, why is it rattleing now?   I  have driven over 1000 mi. since I had brakes replaced and they never rattled before.

anything you guys could offer would be greatly appreciated because that sound is really irkin' me ya' know?  because the car is real nice and tight and now it sounds like a bucket of bolts because of one little pin.

   Thanks, Mark

If you are on the brakes when you go over a bump I seriously doubt that they would rattle.  I would make sure all the bolts are tight on the caliper and that the pin has no wear marks or grooves.  Make sure the lug nuts are tight too and your center cap is tight.  Double check everything that would be touched when they serviced the brakes.  Something else may be loose.  Just a couple of thoughts to try .

Every car I have ever owned that made a rattle while hitting a bump was usually a suspension part.  Most of time that part was a ball joint that was shot.   I would raise the front on jack stands and try and rock the wheel from top to bottom.  If it moves freely then you have a bad ball joint.  If not I would start pushing and pulling around on some other parts eventually it will turn up.

L82M21 gave the hint I needed to figuer it out.  I would go over a bump: Rattle.   I would go over the same bump while on the brake alittle:  No rattle.

Thanks, Guys.   But now what to do about it?

Check the caliber mounting hardware, the shocks/mounting hardware and the control arm bushings/ mounting hardware. With brakes applied the front suspension is loaded to a degree and may mask the rattle if it is a shock. Hope this helps with your search,
Scott

I agree. You need to check out what everyone has mentioned here. Ball joints, shocks, bushings and their hardware.
