Confused I am replacing my first set of rear wheel bearings. It has been some years since I have had to deal with replacing, repacking, adjusting and dealing with, in any way, tapered roller bearings like in years past. I always like to do my own work, but if I have it done at a dealership or a repair shop it will cost hundreds probably, considering the cost of labor. Is it a better investment to just buy a new trailing arm/wheel bearing assembly complete and just bolt it in? My second question is: my current '82 trailing arms look to be original equipment, Eckler's sells the arm with a 3-5 year warranty, just how long do they last or should they last before they need to be rebuilt or replaced.
This site is great! Thanks, TerryG.

I purchased a new set from VanSteel. A complete T/A assembly. After 25 years there is a lot of wear and stress issues to consider. My opinion is to replace the entire unit and be secure in the knowledge that the T/A is one less part to worry about on the road.

Unless you have some experience with the trailing arms, my advice would be to go with ready to run TAs. To do it yourself, there are specialty tools required to disassemble and set up the bearings and they have to be within correct tolerances in order to avoid premature wear and failure...

I got my TAs from an Ebay dealer that turned out to be one of the major builders for Mid-America and others. They go by Tylersparts on Ebay and you can call and ask for Jim. He's an awesome guy, very reasonable and really works with his customers.  The arms were brand new with reconditioned, original GM spindles (better steel that some of the newer replacement stuff...). 2 years and NO problems. TROUBLE FREE!!

I know a few folks from the site also know him personally and they think the world of him also. Below is a link of his for some TAs he currently has listed:

If you do call Jim, tell him you were referred by a C3VR member and that you're a member of the club. He should do right by you on shipping or something else...

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I rebuilt mine, but like Paul said you need a few special tools. If you do decide to take it on you will want to spend some time reading up on how to do it.Wink

I want to thank everyone for their input to my wheel bearing repair needs. I'm a day and a half into it and I cannot get the spindle out of the assembly. I guess it is seized from heat because the inner bearings are somewhat destroyed. I've had to disconnect or remove everything except the T/A. I had to remove the emergency brake pads the hard way. So far only one broken spring. Next time I'm going for the entire assembly and save some time and cursing.

Thanks '76, that's the best deal yet! I kills me to have my car sitting on blocks. I don't see anything wrong with my trailing arms except dirt and I have the left one completely disassembled.

Terntes... I put a t/a in my press last month and ruined a spindle and bent the trailing arm body, just trying to remove spindle! I took the advise found on this website, bought a spindle knocker, hit it hard 5 times and spindle popped right out...no damage anywhere.Lesson learned.

I may be too late for that, seems the bearing race may be seized onto the spindle, so I'm going to send it to a dealer here or out to one of the links I've received.
Thanks, TerryG.
