Vette(s): 1978 Silver Anniversary model. Original L82 engine, 700r4 trans, edelbrock intake, thorly headers, rack&pinion steering, mono rear and front spring, MSD 6A box
Rear wheel bearing question. After converting to rack and pinion steering I had the alignment done at a shop. They told me I should have new wheel bearing. After going through the receipts that the previous owner supplied me with I found on that had the rear wheel bearing checked both were @.005. This was done at Corvette & High Performance shop in Olympia Wa. The car has 3,000 miles on it since the check was made. Is the locale shop after my money?

MAYBE THEY`RE TALKING ABOUT THE FRONT BEARINGS. SINCE IT WAS THE THE FRONT OF THE CAR YOU HAD WORK DONE TO. CHECK `EM OUT

They said that both the right front and right rear had play in them. I was watching and yes they both did have some play. Not much but there was movement.

When the rear was checked did they use a dial indiactor to measure movement? To get an accurate check with the vette off the ground, you should unbolt the 1/2 shaft from the spindle so there is no binding. Then attach a dial indicator to the trailing arm or caliper mount to measure the axial movement. I would not expect the bearings to be worn out in 3000 miles but it never hurts to have some one else check them. Changing out the bearings is a bit of work if you do it yourself.

They did it by eye. Think I'll take it to another shop for a proper check.
