Hi all!
I need some info...
I have an empty space where the spare tire is supposed to be, & I want to fill it. What is the correct wheel size for my '76?
I've checked a few tire/wheel places, & they want to sell me a aftermarket (fancy) rim. I'm just going to put a tire on it, & put it in the holder. There are Cragars on the car now, so I don't have an example to go by.

From what I know the standard rally wheel for '69s-'82s is an 8x15. The original spare (I think) is still in the basket under "The Toy" but the skins that meet the road are newer radials from Sears. I'll be going back to Goodyears when the time comes for new tires 'cause that's what was on there to begin with.

I'd think you'd be able to get a used rim fairly reasonably at most any salvage yard and mount the current equivilant of the original F70 tire on it to fill the void. The rally wheels are available in most of the parts catalogs, but if you're not overly concerned about the "originality" factor any GM 8x15 rim should be adequate for the role of spare.

Thanks, that's what I needed to know. I'm not concerned about the originality of the spare, I just need a spare!

I'll go to the salvage yard tomorrow & get a tire/rim.

My 79 came from the factory with a donut for a spare. I am positive that it is the original tire. I'll check tomorrow, as the vette is in the back garage.

Just checked my specification manual for a 79. It shows the tire as being a "P195/80D15" Bias Ply. I presume that means "donut" in my language.

I'll go out back and check my door info sheet.

The build sheet calls for code "UHFB" for the spare tire. The information in the owners manual says that the spare tire carrier is not designed to carry a fully inflated full size tire. It is only for carrying a temporary tire, or "donut". Or in case of emergency, a "flat tire". Why they did this is beyond me. It seems like they could have fitted it both ways.
