Unfortunately, I now have to replace a front wheel stud (and I plan on replacing the other four while I'm at it, since this one broke in half!)
Can anyone share tips on how best to do this? Getting them out in the first place, and then back in with the new ones? Do they have to be pressed out/in (which will mean a trip to a machine shop)? Any best sources for these (I'd like to use ARP if they make studs to fit C3's)?

Front wheel studs can be replaced by removing the hub/rotor assy. Knock the damaged stud out.
Start the new stud in from the rear, making sure to line up the "splines" as best you can. Tap it in lightly a little ways, and the take one of the lug nuts, turn it around backwards, so the flat side is toward the rotor. Then pull the stud thru the hub with the nut, until it is fully seated. Tap on the back side of the stud as you go, just to help it along, but no need to bang the heck out of it. Simple, eh?

Sounds like you have done a few Joel.
I assume when you say "Knock the damaged stud out" you are saying to pound it into the hub/rotor so it comes out the backside.
Do you need to place a wooden block on the end of the broken stud so it won't damage the splines?
Is there a chance of cracking the hub when removing the stud?

if you want to remove them "gently" just use a bench vise..
put a 3/4" deep well socket on the back side of the stud and then tighten the vise.. the stud will press out just fine..
or just beat it with a hammer.
put them in by lining up the splines and gently tapping them in..
use an old lug nut and some flat washers.. and then use an impact wrench and cinch the nut down.. this pulls through the stud.. i mangled a few flat washers in the process.... but they all seated nicely.
