Hello everyone. This is my first post after the new software change. I just got back from picking up a set of slotted aluminum wheels from a gentleman who has a 1979. He put cragar SS wheels on his car and they look fantastic! I wanted the factory wheels for mine and after much talk and time he decided to let go of his and sell them to me! They aren't in mint condition but, look very respectable. They need cleaned up and polished a bit and I am ready to do that. This was the first thing I have bought for my car in about 6 months. Been a long dry spell. Just thought I would share it with everyone here. Now, what should I do with my old vectors....Hmmmm

Hey bicman:

I just purchased new wheels for my 79 as well.  I already have the aluminum slots, but wanted a set I could paint black and install on the car while I refinished the slots.  Since you'll probably be finishing yours before I get to mine maybe you could keep us all up to date on how it goes: time spent, products used, finish product, etc.

I'm really kind of upset that Adam couldn't keep my "smokin" smiley, so I guess I'll have to choose another one.

Vettedreams79, sounds good to me. Did you get another set of slotted wheels? Are you gonna have them powder coated? My brother in law said he could do that for me on the centers. Right now they are just painted and it looks a bit sloppy. I am also thinking of getting the spinners to replace the center caps for my wheels. I have always liked them.
I am still not sure what I will do with my old wheels. They are vectors like what was on the General Lee on Dukes of Hazards.

Talk to ya later!

I saw a recent reply from Adam somewhere that as time permits he'll find a way to get the old smileys back.  Hang in there...!!!

Bicman:

This is too ironic...!  You buy slots to replace your turbines "like on the General Lee"...and I buy turbines so I can refinish my slots!

Anyway, I was just planning on painting the turbines black, but if your BIL wants to powder coat them for me I'm all ears for a price to do that!  They're supposedly American Racing (at least that's what the center caps say), and the center caps are glued in or something because the PO tried to beat one of them out with a hammer and a 2x4.  He beat it alright...out of shape that is!

I just thought the Pride and Joy would look good with black wheels and I couldn't find a set that was reasonably priced so I thought I'd paint my own, but if your BIL can do it for a reasonable price I'll consider it.  They're not in the best shape, but if he can clue me into what kind of prep he needs done and the best way to go about doing the prep I'm willing to learn.

Let me know!

I was going to have the new slotted ones powdercoated in just the center around the center caps and where the lug nuts go. He told me that it would be $40.00 to $50.00 bucks. Are you talking about having the slotted wheels or the A.R. Wheels (gen. Lee style vectors) powdercoated. Let me know for sure which and I will check on a price for the whole set completely powdercoated.

Vincent:

I'm talking about the vectors.  I bought them off ebay recently and they are pretty oxidized, but I think that will clean off easily.  A light grinding to smooth out the curb rash on fronts and I should be all set.  Of course how easily I'll get the grime and brake dust off the inside of the wheels is another story.

Thanks for your help man.

I hear ya. That break dust and road grime gets stuck on pretty good. I got my vectors used as well and they needed a lot of attention. I ended up getting them medi blasted at a place just north of me. It cost me $50.00 but it was well worth it. It doesn't hurt the aluminum and it gets down in the crevases real well. They don't look as good as the polished wheels but, it made a big difference. I will check and see what my BIL says about doing the whole wheel in black powder coat. Fenton, MI. isn't to far away from Ohio. We lived in the U.P. (Marquette) for 8 years. Talk to you later dude!

Any ideas what I would search on for media blasting in my area?  Or should I just take them to a good body shop?  I'm thinking I should probably get a good blasting cabinet for the new pole barn when I move into the new house.  Probably wouldn't be a bad investment!

I looked in our phone book under Metal Refinishers and found a place called Metal Coating. Called them and got things taken care of farely easy. I had to make an appointment to show them what I wanted done and they took it from there. Had them back in 4 days. Not bad I think.
