First off, I have been having a problem with a whining sound in the back end of my car.

I jacked the back end up and turned the wheels, checked all fluids and seems to be recently replaced. I also checked the universals and nothing has come up to a reason to the noise. could it possibly be the wheel bearings? The trailings arms have been replaced. Do they check the wheel bearings while doing that? I'm also thinking that it could be the gears. I've been stumped for quite a while now. I would appreciate some input.

I also noticed that the front pinion bearing and seal is leaking. Is that a sign of a worn bearing?

Did you check for "slop" in outer pinion bearing. Grab the yoke on the pinion and try to move it up, down or side to side. And check for any roughness in the pinion by turning the yoke by hand. Let us know what you come up with.

I also recently had a whine in the rear end. Parked on a cat. Sorry, couldn't resist.
Seriosuly, Sarge is right on the money. From what i've been told it would normally cause a "clunk", but you might want to replace the rear end fluid anyway and put some posi-trac lube in it. Just a thought. good luck.

I hope everyone has a good New Year and good riding in the year of 2004.

I checked the pinion yoke. I moved it up and down, side to side and there is no movement. I even checked the sid bearings and no movement there either. I know its a no no but I jacked up the back of the car and started the engine to see if I could hear the noise. (Hated to see it go through the end of the garage) It sounded rough but not as bad as when it is on the highway. Someone told me today that it may be the ring and pinion gear and it is something that I dont' want to do myself. Is it possible to tighten up the ring and pinion gears if they are worn? Also, would new oil and posi-track help with the noise?

If I have to redo the ring and pinion gear, approximatly how much would that cost?

Any Suggestions for what the best brands of differential oil and posi-track to use?
