Vette(s): White '79 Corvette. It's a driver.

I took my Corvette for a short ride after dinner.

A guy at a stop light told me it looked like my left rear wheel was wobbling a little bit. Then I asked a neighbor to look at it as I rolled down the block. He saw the same wobble.
I was surprised because there were no symptoms; vibrations, noises, etc...
I recently put over 400 miles on it in one day and had no problems.

Where do I start?
Rear Wheel Bearings?
If the Spindle was going bad, wouldn't I feel or hear something?

Thanks in advance for any input.

You need to get both rear wheels up in the air.  Then put it in neutral and spin the rear tires.  Watch the rim edge.  You may have a bent rim.  If the rim is steady but you can see the wobble, it's a tire.   If you suspect the rim, switch it to the other side and try again.   IF the problem move to the other side the rim problem is confirmed.  If not it's time to put a dial indicator on the hub.  The hub may be bent, but probably not.

If you can't spin the wheels fast enough, you can start the car, put it in gear and let the car spin them.  But be careful.  Make sure you are VERY secure on jack stands.  You don't need it to take off without you.

I'm hoping to put the car up on a lift. I'll follow your suggestions & see what happens.
I gotta admit I'd be (happily) surprised if it was a bent rim. I don't like the idea of having to replace rear end parts as that gets expensive.
I'll report back.

Well, I got it up on a lift today and by golly it is a bent rim. Actually, both rear rims are bent. The left rear was worse than the right.

Kyster, I did what you suggested by swapping the wheels around. I also wound up putting the fronts on the rear. When I spun them they were fine.

So, now the problem is isolated and I won't worry about having to replace any rear end parts in the near future.

I'm kind of in a spell of disbelief because I don't recall driving over any large potholes that would have bent them. And both rears only???
Combine that with no vibrations or noises while driving.???

I'll be checking the locals for two 15 X 8 Rallyes and put it to rest.

Thanks for the rant!

Glad you found it.   Thumbs%20Up   That has to be some peace of mind.   Rims are easy compared to other items.
