It should be on the engine pad. The last six digits of the chassis serial
number. I think

No numbers at all there? If not, I guess the block has been decked. Does he by any chance have the tank sticker?

A friend was looking at this car on Ebay (1970, 4 spd vert.),and the clock was ticking. Down to about 2 hrs. so we hoped we could verify the numbers matching factor. No sale ! No problem. I think he may have landed an even better find. thank you for your quick response Jim.

If there's no numbers on the pad, then there's no way it can possibly be proven it is the original, factory installed engine. The casting dates can help, but without the stamped numbers, it would always be questionable, and therefore worth less $$$.
For future reference, you can check out the Engine ID/Stamp Pad locations.

Thanks for the education guys. I was aware of the small block, but don't know diddly about the BB. I'll be ready next time
