I would like some suggestions on modifications for my 1974, 195HP automatic trans car. Here is a list of the parts purchased so far: Comp cam kit CCA k12 234 2, specs for it are as follows- Intake .447, Exh .454 intake center line 106.0, lobe seperation 110, hydraulic lifters. Roller rocker arms with a 1.52 ratio, Edelbrock 2101 dual plane intake. Now the biggest question I have is on heads. I have been looking at some World heads, they have a Sportsman II cast iron heads that look rather appealing. They claim I can use the Edelbrock intake without modifying it. I was wondering if anyone has any dealings with them or no of anyone that has. I am going to call them Monday for some information. Can anyone tell me what CC heads I may have on mine now from the factory? I will be starting this work in January so I have some time make decisions yet. I am going to go with a set of headers once the cam has been broken in and I also plan on changing to HEI ignition after I am up and running. This started out as an intake manifold and dress the engine up but it is going much further now. not the original plan! I also plan on changing the rear end gears as well but not until the motor work is done. SO much for factory! Thanks for any help you can offer.

Are you just looking for a cruiser or very fast or set you in your seat fast?
There have been a lot of posts on this check with a search. I know some of the the other guys can give you more info on the heads. I put in a MSD ignition kit after rebuilding the distributor. So far so good but it has not had a true road test yet.

I am after a cruiser that will set u back into your seat when accelerating. I havent built a motor in over 25 years and back then I was a dodge person. I never paid attention to the chevrolets. Now I need information so I dont screw anything up. I only want to tear this down and put it back together one time.

You have chosen a mild, low RPM torque cam, so the rest of the engine should match. Your heads are 74 cc so your compression ratio with flat pistons will be about 9.0:1. You could go a little higher with that cam, but not more than 9.5. Choose heads with small runners to keep velocity up for good torque. You don't need big flow, since your cam will be done by 5,000. Your intake is a perfect match for the cam. The Sportsman II heads are way too big. I would use a set of Vortec Chev heads, but you would need to exchange your intake for the same one but to fit the Vortecs. Vortec heads are cheap enough that you could afford to buy another manifold if needed. They really are the best heads for up to 400 HP and 5,500 RPM. Remember that if you tune your engine with exhaust manifolds, you will need to do it over again with headers, so why not just put them on in the first place.
This should be a great driving car, with lots of off-the-line power and response.
Have fun

Larry,
I am planning on using ceramic headers. The cam requires a 25 - 30 minute 2500 RPM break in at start up. I was told that the ceramic headers should not go thru that type of break in when they are new, So I thought I would just run the manifolds for a while then go to the headers so the finish on the headers would not be harmed. I am glad to hear your thoughts on the heads. I will do a topic on heads and see if you and others can help my understanding on everything that should be considered. Does your company sell any of the heads I will be considering? Thanks again for your time and thoughts.
