Vette(s): 1965-327 coupe, 1968-small block coupe, 1969-427, 1971-454 coupe and currently a 1976-ZZ4 coupe reborn again,and hotter than ever.. Add a 1996 CE LT-4 for backup
Todd, You'll see my 1976 in April. I have the ZZ4 with a .525 lift cam, 1.6 roller rockers, 750 cfm double pumper. On my trip to Tennessee last year I would get 20MPG without AC, the wife insisted on AC so I would average 18 MPG. I have a 5 speed manual. @ 80MPH with a 3:36 rear end my RPM in 5th was 2250. I have no problem with the gas mileage at this rate, I'm taking this one on the longhaul in 2008..Terry

If both Engines are set up the same I doub't that there would be much if any diffrence in MPG. The 383 would have the advantage with a longer stroke but a disadvantage of more CI. MPG is so controled by Weight and Areo and everything else besides the Engine.  So what dose a new Z06 with 500 HP and a Honda CRV AWD with 130HP have in common?  They both get 26 MPG on the Freeway.... Richard.

Todd,
Sorry to hear about the Mrs. getting the axe. She might want to see if age discrimination was a factor.

Back to the subject at hand, a tranny with overdrive might pay for itself in a short time, especially if you did an exchange and at the same time you did the engine swap.

Hi Todd, I have had my ZZ-4 for 9 years and 35,000 miles. It's made the long runs and short ones, very strong and durable. Terry and Sarge will agree with me, i'm sure. The possibilities of more HP and TQ are open, add fast burn heads and hot cam, you have a ZZ-430. I also run a 5-spd, 3:36 and get 22-23 MPG. at 75 or 80 MPH. Chevy High Performance had some good articles on the 383, check out their back issues. Good Luck Dick
