Mike, that is a pic of your engine stamp pad and it all looks great !! The first part T0820LR equates to T for Tonawanda engine assembly, 0820 is your engine assembly date of August 20th '68, very early car and the good news is that it lines up well with the May (or June) casting dates on the heads. LR is probably the best news because that is the engine suffix code for 427 cu.in., 435hp, manual transmission !! The second part of the stamp, 19S729961 is the vin dirrivative. 1 is for Chevrolet, 9 is the model year, '69, S is for St. Louis final assembly and the last six digits 729961 should match the last six digits of your VIN. So if indeed your car is that VIN with a manual transmission, your well on your way to a legit L71. The next things to look for if you want to know more of the puzzle is the block casting number and date code. They are located on the back of the block between the cylinder heads and the bell housing. Casting number is on the passenger side of the block and date code is on the drivers side (that may be vise versa on a BB). Post those #'s and we can decode a bit further.

3964291(rectangle port, closed chamber, 396, 402, 427, 454, 109cc chambers), comes up for a '70 LS7 in Corvette, but were also used for the 435.

I very much appreciate the replies to my posts. I am not a Rat Motor expert as I owned Mouse motored Chevy's in my youth.
The VIN engine number matches the VIN on the side of the windshield.
The car is a close ratio 4 speed manual. it has the Transistor Ignition which I believe came wit the L71 option. From what little I ascertained on the car I felt confident enough to purchase it last July. I am investigating details such as the head castings and such over the winter.
The 69 Vette had revisions to the car throughout the run. From Wiper Vacuum canister and vacuum system runs to body moulding revisions, three all told. a real piecemeal of varied parts!
I will get the block number tomorrow, as family was over for supper earlier today.

Rear Block Casting Number, Drivers Side. Not a perfect picture as little room between block and firewall.
Number appears to be 3963512 with a capital T sideways below number.
