70 454 timing mark

My 70 has a 454, power steering, A/C and the idler pulley. 

Its very difficult to see the balancer and timing pointer to set the timing. I feel like I'm only a fraction of an inch away from the pointed fan blades and up against the hood to try and see the timing mark.

Anybody have any good tricks to see it easier?

paint the timing mark on the balancer with white paint and also the marks on the timing tab

I did that...............its just buried in there so its very difficult to see the timing pointer and balancer

It's hard to see the timing marks even on a small block with P/S & A/C...
Loosening or removing the fan belts gives you a little more safety, but it's still a pita to get positioned to actually SEE the timing marks with a straight shot....

It still may be over simplistic the 454 may be different but for my 350  painting the markers with white paint then I purchased a not to expensive digital timing light with the advance feature it has a very bright light used inside shop area, and if need be time at night

I'm sure I cant explain it in  a way you can understand, you would actually have to be there and experience it for yourself. Its not seeing the painted line on the balancer or the timing pointer. Its getting into a position to physically locate the balancer and timing pointer. Setting up some mirrors might be the ideal solution.  The only way I can see it now is to put myself dangerously close to the spinning cooling fan. On my big block the cooling fan has pointed edges sticking up past the fan shroud towards the motor. 
I have a bright timing light so thats not the problem either.

The timing tab on the big blocks is in a goofy position anyway. Add in the P/S, alternator, belts, and the razor sharp fan, it's really difficult to do without fear of the poop hitting the fan...literally. That's why I usually won't even use a light, and just set the timing by ear/nose/throat....and a vacuum gauge.
I feel your pain, Fairlane514. I have gone as far as fabricating a timing tab to bolt up on the bottom of the oil pan, and then marking the balancer to use that tab. You have to crawl under the car to see it, and have a helper twist the dist, but....it works.
