I had a 700R-4 put in my 1980 vette. It was done in Florida. I had a meeting there and drove my car, left it with the shop and picked it up three days later. It was an expensive swap but worth every penny of it. It was done by the corvette clinic, just south of Jacksonville Fla. Total bill was $2100.00. That was turn key. I highly recommend the change. My mileage went from 13/14 on a trip to over 20 mpg. The overdrive in fantastic on the highway and I had a switch installed to turn it off when I am running around the city.
I have also had the conversion done to my 1980.
I really love that low first gear and that 4th and lockup overdrive.
A local shop did the conversion. We are still using the stock shifter, and ALL the gears work. Mine was done for about $1500 total, including new u-joints, driveshaft work, crossmember work, shift kit, corvette servo in the tranny, higher stall convertor......... really makes the car enjoyable to drive.
The mileage is nice too. I used to get about 250 - 255 miles to the tank, before the light would come on. The other day on the way to a car show, I pulled in just as the light came on and the trip odometer was reading 340!!! I had to look a couple of times before I would believe it, but I did pick up some considerable mileage.
The conversion is well worth the money.....

I am in the process of installing one in my wifes 1975 coupe. Along with some other mods. I di buy some stuff from Bow Tie Overdrives, they were great to work with. Bought Cross Member and Sifter Kit to change pattern on stock shifter.
I also had some work done by Corvette Clinic for this project. Chris is very knowledgable about Corvettes and has been super to do buisness with.

I pretty much did this one on my own on my '80. I used to live around 20 minutes from Carlisle, so the parts selection was great. I grabbed an '87 700R4 from a donor vette. The tailshaft extension had to be swapped with a standard extension, the 87 had a mounting arrangement for the C4 torque arm.
Next, I used a crossover and driveshaft from an '82 vette. It bolted right in place and there was no need to cut or balance the driveshaft. The 82 was the only year C3 that came stock with a 700R4. Next, the TV cable had to be attached to the throttle body. I ran 2 versions here, a shorter one when the engine was carbed, and a longer cable when I converted to fuel injection. I'm not sure about part numbers here, but the TV is available in different lengths.
The best past about the TV cable is that you can dial how hard your shift is by adjusting the cable a click at a time. Just don't go too radical. It can vary from granny shifts that you can't feel to a 1-2 break the tires loose at anything above 1/3 throttle...
