Vette(s): 1977 Corvette l48 Custom
hey guys... My anme is Louis. I'm using my friend's account. My dad and I just aquierd a 1977 vette, with a 350hydro tranny, and an l48 engine. We can most definatly tell that it needs headers, and the card is dry and old. The car is all original. I work at kmart so I don't have much cash flow but I'm willing to save. I have a configuration here that we worked on for awhile, as being that this is a c3 vette site, I figured that you guys would know best. Would this configuartion work with this engine? And would I need a new camshaft to accomodate all these parts? And which should I buy first the carb, or the headers. Also I cant find a flow master rquast system for a 1977 vette do you guys know of one, or an equavlent soultion? Als o should I bother replacing the heads, or not? I am gettign the tranny rebuilt, I mean I have a lot of questions I'm only 16 and this is my first project. We really have not takin the motor out and looked over it all but thsi is stuff that we know its going to need, adn that we want. Also I want to trade out the air filter with the one I have chosen, but I am a little confused as to how its going to work, becasue the one that I chose does not have the "hose soultion" where it travles through the hose and into the end of the air filter, below is the configuration I hate to burdon you all with so many questions but I am really confused and I am a newb to cars. But thanks in advance
-Louis

Vette(s): 69 Conv #'s match 427, TKO-600/.64, 3.36HD-Posi, HT, T/T, PS, PB, PW, SP, Leather, Comp XE264HR & Roller Rockers & Lifters, Air-Gap RPM intake, Holley St Av 770 VS, MSD 6AL+Dist+Blaster SS, K&N, Jet-Hot Hooker Side-Pipes, Steeroids, Al Rad, Spal Fans
those choices all seem decent

but you need to do something about those chevy lumina looking wheels/hubcaps and that bent antenna first.

and if youre going with a holley carb and air cleaner.. why not get a holley intake-up kit.

and as for the headers... full length small tube headers might be a better choice. (maybe hooker super competition small tube)

as for what to do with the air intake.. disconnect it.. but save it. if your just changing the breather for looks.. then change it. if you just want better air flow.. leave it alone and install a k&n or similar filter.

make sure your new intake is low rise enough to fit under the hood. (the edelbrock will fit)

Hi Louis
If you are only 16 and a Corvette is your first car with a limited budget you should just start with a good tune up,fix whatever else it needs (it will need something)
drive it and enjoy it while you think about upgrades.
Take your time,do it right.

Hey Louis,

I agree with both Steve and Cthulhu.

There are lots of posts that talk about the type of mods to consider if this is your first vette. Check out this post:

I agree with his term used in his web site, but I don't think its appropriate for this forum.
If we can change it to say www.screwtreehuggers instead of www.f---treehuggers that would be ok by me.

For a dude your age to have a first Vette, good for you. Some kids that age are pulling their mommy's apron strings for some dough. And you have a job, so you are way ahead of the game.
First Car? you will learn a lot on this one. Maybe you should put the car in good running condition, before you start thinking about all of that fancy stuff. Here is a partial list for you to consider:
Tires
Wheel Alignment and balance
Power Steering Valve and Piston
Belts and Hoses
Change all fluids
All electric check and wiring check
Brakes, rotors, brake fluid check, Check E-Brakes
Good tune up (All that goes with it)
Find good C3 mech that charges less then $70 and hour
Upholstery, carpet
Guages, horn, light switches
Any leaks on the bottom?
Rear trans mount
Valve covers leaking ?
Ignition Wires
Paint and Body
Glass
Power Windows, door locks, brake lights, back up lights
Weatherstripping
Temp gauage showing decent temp?
Shift OK ? Any clunks when you put it in gear
Any noise out of the back end ?
There will be more, not trying to scare you, but get it up and running. Is there inspection in your state? How about the emissions? Smog pump needed ?
Good Luck

Boatman

Thanks guys. and wow thats a big list! The carb cvan be primed, so I can start it again. but I have the $$$ to do what I want, and I perfer to do it so I can get some more power out of the car. I will consider all your posts, as ur all experierts, and own vettes and such, and I'm a nub. I will check for it all. But basiclly what I was planning on doing which I didnt mention was to take the engine out of the car ona hoist and looka t it make sure everythign was cool, replace parts that were bad.. Have the orig hydrolic 3SPD tranny rebuilt, and add on my parts before the engine goes back into the bay. But first before I bought everythign I knew the whole car has to come apart. And thats cool, but I just wanted to know what every1 thought of the parts so that when the time comes... I had the $$ b/c I know what my goal is for them, and I wanted to amke sure that I know thye will work witht he engine, and with each other, and you guys have assured with em they will, and I will look at the supercomp headers (soemone else told me they wouldnt fit(L00L)). TO better explain the wheels..... The guy I bought it off of... put these crappy lumina hub caps on b/c the orig beauty rim, and hub caps were stolen off the car. So he put those on. :( Should I bohter changing the mufflers on there withlike flowmasters? Or jsut through a replacement kit on, with soem chrome tips? I'm thinkin the second option but idk. Like I said i'm just tryin to get an Idea of a goal and such. And to let you guys know the car is all original, every last peiece, even the fadded paint is the orig color from 27years ago.. L0L but she does run good and there is no leaks, my parents drive it home from accross town, and the did go like 120MPH l00l IT weas liek a 30 min drive, andthen I started it up a few time, and no leakes, but the carb is really weak it needs to idle for a bit before you cna actually drive the car, l00l.

Thanks
-Louis

I suppose Sarge has a point, if any of us used the f word in a thread, we'd get yelled at by a moderator! I have to admit, I laughed when I saw it though.
I'm all for the younger generation showing interest in the hobby, maybe he should take some of his vette money and spend it on an English tutor first though. His spelling could use a bit of help. Just an old fogey wondering what kids are being taught these days! |headscratch|

Ha-ha! Is this a little bit better for you? Look everything is spelled right, and with complete punctuation! I don't type correctly on forums, or even any internet app which requires text input; its just one of my things. As for the fu**treehuggers thing, most people do find it amusing, but I am sorry if I offended anyone. It’s a site my friend and I started, and it’s the only space I have to upload stuff without having to turn my computer into a host with apache. There still is a lot to go over on the Corvette, and my dad should be coming home soon, and I will show him all your post's, and then continue from there. We don’t have a lot of time to invest right now, so things will be slow. And they don't teach us a damn thing in school, its a flop or a cop-out, there is no reason to be in the school system anymore. Kids are mean which make the school unpleasant, and that does not help your concentration, or make you happy to be there. As well as the crap you learn from he previous year you learn all over again, only til' about the end of the third quarter do you actually begin learning new stuff. I learn more stuff on the internet than I do in school, and I have a lot of problems with kids in school, which is why I chose to do: www.team-a.com so much better, I teach myself, I do my assignments over the internet, I can go at my own pace, I still have teachers to ask questions to. And I only go on the internet for school about two hours a day. Then I can work from 11AM-12 midnight everyday! I can make some serious bank for the Vette :)

Late
