Louis - That 77 does not look too bad. You have something to start with. As far as that 100+ mph stuff goes, do not do that speed with that car. Especially on a highway. The back end will come around faster on you then you can imagine. Corvettes were made to go in a straight line, fast. There are Vettes set up for road racing, etc., and that is serious bucks when you get into the suspension tricks, etc.
Take a hint from some of us older dudes. If you ever decide to go fast, and faster then what you and the car can handle, just imagine yourself laying in a bed, paralyzed, looking outside at everyone having a good time, and you have to have someone feed you. There are a lot of ex-bikers, male and female, in that position, wishing they would have taken it a little easy. Some of the time it was not their fault, and got it at an intersection. Ex car jocks also. When you are laid up for the rest of your life, it ain't cool.
The Corvette has no protection for you. It is a frame and cage wrapped in glass. Enjoy yourself.

OK louis! You may have just renewed my faith in youth!
If you're not learning in school, then good for you to take it on your own!
BTW, I have 2 sons ages 25 and 30 that I'm very proud of!
Good luck with the vette, stick around here, we'll be glad to help! |thumb|

Yeah... thanks guys. however I'm not saying that I'm not interested in an education. I'm simply saying that I would rather learn well, then be misserable and learn nothing, and waste my whole day doing it. As for speeding in the Vette, I know this si wrong already. I know that the rear end of the Vette's are light as hell, and produce a lot of torque! And when speeding this can casue lifetime problems, possibly even death. After reading other people post's on racing weither it be a Corvette, Camaro, T/A, or Thunderbird, or even an SRT-4 I have decided that street racing is not a good idea, a few people are blind, have dead passangers, broken necks, back problems, or paralyzed, so when you see a kid like myself, dont think that I'm liek the rest lazy, dumb, and a pot-head, I'm more brains, than "cock and balls" as some people say. I just want abit more performace out of my car, and to have it look nice, thats all. Can I ask a question? Wait a minute I just did, lol. Anyway with these new headers, carb, and airfilter... Am I going to need a new camshaft? And then If I do I imagine a new crankshaft as well. I was thinking both comp cams if I need to, the camshaft with a .225 lift, is thsi correct? I am not goign to get the L98 aluminum heads. No point in it, just another waste of time, like the MSD ignition. I'm just going to get replacment 1977 Vette heads. There is a lot more simple stuff I can do. I may not even get the air filter. I might just MOD this one to where it looks cool, and get it dipped in chrome. Or better yet since its the original part, find a replica one, and do what I just said. Add soem mesh clean it up, etc... For the headers I went out int ot he garage with my dad, and took a look under the hood the headers are a tight small tube formation, kind of like this: http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=2863&prmenbr=361 I'm going to have to find them in chrome. We are not goign to take the motor out for a little bit since we dont have a stand, but we have the hoist, and both my dad and I have a crazy work schdule, and my cousin is moving in with us(hes going to help us with the Vette) It's hella crazy right now. Not to mention I need to make more room int he garage :)

If you are wanting to make improvements with carb, headers and air cleaners, it wouldn't hurt to look at changing the cam. As far as the crank, unless you're planning onreally turning the rpm's up, the stock crank should be just fine.
Check out the ceramic coated headers and sidepipes if you want looks and performance. They look great and the finish lasts longer than chrome, IMO.

Hey Louis,

Congratulations on getting your first vette. Good luck with her. I'll always refer to my vette as a female, because she can be a real biznitch at times. It's nice to see a young adult like yourself going for the old school.

As far as your cam goes, you might not want to go bigger that a .214 total duration with an automatic. The idle will be unforgiving at that lift. There are a lot of guys here that know much more, and have forgotten more than I know, so ask away. If you get the headers, the stock mufflers should do you fine, maybe just dress them up a little. A complete exhaust will cost you, not to mention, not too many shops will do the job for you, while cutting out that stupid catalytic converter. They don't want to get fined for doing a job like that. Check out the vette parts companies, there are more out there than you can count.

Most important, just have fun. If you can't hit 120 yourself, don't worry, with experience, and the right combination of add-ons, you will. Just be sure you are in the right place to do it.

Check your area for a local Corvette club, also. Most clubs run sanctioned autocrosses, and they are a blast.

Great to have you here, and, don't think any question here is stupid. I ask some doozies sometimes.

Welcome.

Thanks. Ok guys... I mixed a lot of things that I have been told by you guys (mostly) some other people with Vettes. Here is what I’ve come up with...

For the carb I still don't know what one to choose, either of these would be cool; but if it were you what would you choose?

http://grthost1.no-ip.biz:8085/vette/carb/

For the headers I re-thought the situation, and either of these seems fine, but once again if it was you, what one would you choose?
http://grthost1.no-ip.biz:8085/vette/headers/

As for the heads, we all know they need to be replaced, and I can’t find any original or reproduction 1977 L48 heads anywhere, you guys know where I can find them?

And final; I was told (its in a post here) that I need a new camshaft which I agree on, I thought a .225 Lift would be ok, but now I’m told to try and stay below a .214 lift, and I cant find any that mach even a .225, let a lone a .214 or below, do you guys know where I can get one?

Thanks guys (sorry for so many questions, I hate to be a burden!)

HI Loius! Congrats on getting your first Vette...!!! You will have a lot of fun working on it over the years and learn more than you can imagine.

I'm not one of the assigned moderators for this forum, but here's the "yelling" that was referenced earlier. If you haven't done so already please read the Membership Agreement page. The guidelines for membership are few and general for a reason - all of us here LOVE our C3s and want this place to be a comfortable place to exchange ideas, information, experience, and whatever else without hassle, harassment, or ridicule. Everyone has an opinion on everything and that is good. Garage talk is good, alley language is not.

I noticed in one of your later replies that you have figured out how to make URL links clickable so I'll offer this as a way to 'hide' the URL for the picture of your cars. Edit your original post and change the link to look like this: Here is some pics of the car! Here's the syntax, just replace all the exclamation points (!) with pipes (|): !URL=http://yourURLhere!LabelTextHere!/URL!

btw - I know enough about the computer world to know that aliases can be setup for nearly everything. You may want to consider setting one up for your site. Just a suggestion.

Good luck with the projects you have planned for the car. We'll all offer any advice and support we can as you dig into the list of things to do.

Enjoy...!!!

Louis,

Ditch the 1977 L-48 heads. They're pure garbage.

Aluminum heads are out there in droves, for power, they're the way to go. You can find them anywhere, eBay for example.

I see major improvements. Now I can read your post. Now I can understand your language. As you said a lot of people use "custom language" while on line. I do not allow my daughter to do that. I require she retype it into english. You are concerned with education. Don't represent yourself as stupid by way of poor communication.

I applaud the home/computer schools. I know a lot of them are very good, and provide excellent results. I have delt with some very accomplished home schooled young men and women.

As for all the recommendation for your Vette. They are all excellent. But let me through in one more bit to consider. When you put together an engine, all parts must work in harmony. It's difficult to say which is best, without knowing what else is being used. Some components are great for low end torque. Some great for high rpm. But these may work very poorly together. So first, ask two things.

One, what is most important to you in terms of performance and driveability?
Two, how much do you want to spend?

When you answer the first, be realistic in what you want. If you want a drag car, okay. If you want a highway cruiser, okay. If you want a street burner, okay again. But these are different build designs, and will produce results you may not be willing to live with, depending on what you will truly do with the car.

When you answer the second, do it for long term. If you go part way there and settle, with plans to go more later, you may need to scrap what was already done. Quite a waste of money. Don't forget operational cost when it's done.

Give it a lot of thought. Ask some questions and perhaps we can help you decide. Not influence your choice, just supply information to help you make that choice.

Keep your act together, and we will help all we can. Get foul or make no sense to us "Old Guys" and we can ignore you just as much. I prefer to help. It's great to see young folks involved in our hobby and passion. Welcome aboard.
