Good call on that one.
I just did a tune up on the 71 and not one of the eight plugs were gapped the same from the factory. One was at over 50 and two were almost completely closed. The rest were at or around 35 .

Never trust a new plug to be gapped properly for any application. The only ones you don't have to worry about are the ones with the four electrodes...you know...the really fancy($$$$) ones!

You have good compression on the cyl., so that shouldn't be a problem. Now, all you need is fuel, and fire! (At the right time, of course!)

Take it out, or use a different plug. Plug the wire in, and hold the end of the plug against the engine(or other good ground...preferably NOT the carb!)), then have someone start it up. If you see a good spark across the electrode of the plug, then it is firing. That means the problem would have to be no fuel in that cyl., or a vac. leak really close to that cyl.
If there is no spark, then you have a bad wire, or something else is going on with the distributor.
