Hello All,

I've been working a high idle problem with my stock 82.  I have gotten 2 coolant sensors from Checkers Auto parts.  Mine is a two wire with a plastic cover and what looks like a coax plug. The last new one I got had an oblong male type connector.  Do we adapt to the new style sensor or hunt for an original?

The guy at the parts store thought the original part number might help.  Anybody have the part number?

After the EGR replacement and about 12 feet of vacuum lines.  It started well cold and idled around 700 rpm until it warmed up and then the code for O2 and 1200 to 1500 rpm. I have not tried it with the new O2.  It is sitting over night with WD40 to loosen up the old one. I hope to get that out tomorrow.

I converted mine to the new style sensor  long ago and it works well.  The new one should come with a pigtail adaptor for the new style sensor. I think the new ones rely on the body of the sensor getting ground from the engine block so there should be contact through the threads of the sensor and block.

Thanks Chip,  That is what I'll do.  The sensor I have has a two conductor snap in connector.  I'll see if they have a pigtail for that. If not, I'll solder on to the pins.  Thanks for the response.  I'll post my results. I have read the posts on the Emissions Forums to page 46 so, I do have a plan of action.  I have replaced much of the vacuum lines and tightened up everything I could fine loose.  Getting the old O2 sensor out is giving me pains.

Just a little thought on the o2 sensor removal..WD 40 will not work..find some PB blaster or better yet some Sea Foam deep creep stuff..these will actually penetrate the threads and eat the rust off..if it does damage the 02 housing in the exhaust you can tap out the hole or a worse have an exhaust shop weld a new one in..make sure you have a good 7/8 wrench or cut the wires off the old one and use a deep socket 6 point and work it back and forth when getting it out..

Thanks Larry,  I talked with an older manager at the parts store and he identified the old one and says he will have it in store by noon today. This will be the third one with these guys.  I have to say that I did not have the old one to show them until this last visit.

Thanks Rich,  I tried it after an overnight with WD40 and no go.  I picked up some Liquid Wrench and am trying that now.  If that does not work I'll try the PB Blaster or Sea Foam.  Thanks I have not heard of those before.
I have a 6 point O2 sensor socket.  The O2 sensor was replaced about 2 years ago.  Thanks again for the advice.  I'll post my results.

Update:
I'm having a real $^*() of a time getting the O2 sensor out!  I'm just continuing to soak it with PB Blaster and I'm using a 6 point socket.  The CTS came out and the replacement went in smoothly.

The lower AC compressor bracket needs to come out.  The pivot bolt broke where the threads start. I hope to get the bracket out and remove and replace the bolt. I can't wait for the garage to be built.  The AM temps here are very pleasant now.  Late afternoons we are still hitting 95s.

This process is now back to the Emissions and Exhaust troubles.  The car starts well cold.  By that I mean 650-700 rpm for about the first 2 minutes then rises to 1000-1200 rpm and I'm still getting the O2 code after clearing the memory. No leaks around the new CTS and I topped off the coolant since I had to drain some off to remove the CTS. All of the original vacuum lines are now back in place including the EGR and warm inlet air to the air intake.  I may end up taking it to a shop for the O2 removal. I'm working on jack stands and don't have the room for a large breaker bar.  I will continue on the Emissions and Exhaust board.
  

Sounds like you're moving along..to bad about the broken bolt..that 02 sensor may have been installed to tight..sometimes a little impact is needed to get it started..I have a tool that goes in the end of my impact hammer that gives them a wack to just get it loose....try tapping on the end of the ratchet and see if it moves at all..I assume you don't have a large 1/2 drive ratchet so this may help it along...once you do get it out make sure the new one goes in with little or no resistance..if it does get the threads tapped out..if not it will probably go in half way and stop..then your really throwin stuff! That Deep Creep is hard to find but bar none the best stuff next to a blue tipped wrench! Definitely worth looking for..NAPA carries it here but who knows where to get it out there.

I was holding off getting an impact wrench until the garage is finished.  I saw the Sea Foam at the parts store but, got the PB Blaster.  I have a couple of days of work coming up so I'll keep soaking it with PB Blaster. Also, I'm picking up a breaker bar from a buddy at the airport.  Will try again on Sunday. Thanks for the help Rich.
