Did you decide what to put in place of that 195hp mouse? ZZ4? 383? SB 427? 502? Just a rebuild with new heads/cam?

Looks like it is just going to be a remove, clean it up, and replace job.

Gotta keep the cost down.

I'd love to put a 350hp in there, but can't afford it right now.

Perhaps someday!

I understand the budget thing. You might still consider changing the cam and maybe having a machine shop see what they can do with your heads. Shouldn't be much more than a few hundred $ and while you have the motor out of the car, now's the best time.

Matt,
I am totally planning to take the heads and the block to a machine shop!
That's the whole problem to begin with.
It burns & leaks oil.
The #8 and #6 plugs foul almost immediately.

Any idea what a good price is for that kind of job?

I honestly couldn't give you a good figure on cost. You might try to ask here or somewhere else where there's a little more traffic.
Sounds like at the least, you're going to need to clean up the cylinder walls and go with new rings. Hopefully you don't have to bore out the cylinders, because then you'd probably need pistons too.
Anyone else reading this..... what's a typical machine shop charge to go thru a set of heads and do a mild port and polish job? How about cleaning up Adam's block?
If you don't get an answer here, I know there's a bunch of guys on CF who've had this done. You might even get suggestions for shops in your area.
HTH,
Matt

Adam,
Sorry you are not going to replace it. I was looking forward to seeing what kind of pitfalls you had. I have an '69 427/390 that I am planning on pulling and putting on a stand ( best way to NOT blow it up ). Going to replace it with an LS-5, plus some goodies. I think I should be pushing about 550 hp and 525 torque. Gonna be a little tricky cause I put about 10K a year on the car and I want to keep doing the same mileage so I need it to be streetable.
