Topic: Air Cleaner height issues.....
in Forum: C3 Engines
well underway and the first problems have arisen. ; ) Replaced the
stock Quadrajet carb on the 350 with a new Holley 650 cfm. w/electronic
choke. Bolted on just fine after a few minor hose/line mods and she
fired right up and runs like a dream. I'm amazed at how easy it was.
BUT.....
now my air cleaner height is too tall for the hood to close. I don't want
to have to change the hood so I'm wondering if anyone can point me to
the best place to find an air cleaner assembly with a recessed lower pan
that will allow me to swap it out easily. If anybody has specific
experience with this and can offer a hand that will let me avoid digging
thru a million catalogs and trying to find something that is compatible, I'd
REALLY appreciate the headstart.
Thanks so much for any help you can offer and I'll wave when I see you!

pat,
i had the same problem with mine (i went from the q-jet to an edelbrock carb). i'm not sure how "stock" you want to keep it but i picked up a chrome edelbrock 14" dia air cleaner assembly at a local auto parts store for something like $25. i think the element is 3" high. you can get them pretty easily at any pepboys. but the bottom pan is recessed and has an indention on opposite sides to clear fuel lines or choke assemblies or whatever. it works (and looks) great.

I just went & checked, and the factory original Quadrapuke on my '74 is 1/4 inch TALLER than the 600 Holley I have sittin out there on a shelf. How could just putting a shorter carb on create a hood clearance issue?

I unnerstand changing the intake will cause the problem, but what am I missing here?

Pat, did you use some kind of adaptor on top of the carb, where the air cleaner sits?
Or......duh,...did you have to use an adaptor UNDER the carb. That would make sense.(open mouth.......insert foot

pan on the air cleaner it came with had a little 1/2" lip sticking down
around the bottom. It made the whole thing stick up too high for the
new top threaded rod on the Holley. I never actually checked to see if
the hood would close. Since I couldn't fit the wingnut on top of the air
cleaner, I assumed it was now too tall to fit.
I didn't have to adapt the Holley at all but it DID come with a newer,
thicker gasket so I figured the added thickness was what was causing the
height issue.
I just whacked the lip off the bottom of the pan and it sat right down so
the rod would stick thru enough to get the wingnut on. No problem
anymore! Thanks for the help everybody!

the previous owner had installed. I'm not hacking on anything that
appears to be original. I'm not restoring it to original condition but I'm
keeping everything I take off in case the next owner may want to.
