The stock air cleaner on my '79 L48 is a bit unsightly (IMHO) with those 2 snorkels and the duct work that goes along with them.
However, it looks like this set up allows the engine to breath in cooler air from in front of the radiator and the right front wheel well. And I think this set up was originally a good idea borrowed from the L-82s.
Question is;
Will an open (mesh sided) air filter cover cause the engine to breath in warmer air from inside the engine compartment and then make it run poorer/hotter?

It will let more hot air into the intake flow, but prolly not enough to make a noticeable difference. The air cleaners were the open design for many years...they were changed to a closed designs for a couple of reasons. One was because some folks didn't like all the noise, but the main reason had to do with emissions requirements...

Thanks for the textbook version schooling Joel. I liked your down to earth version.
It made sense (even to me) that GM had done this. I had always thought it was for cooler / cleaner air. But then the fenderwell never really seemed to fit the cleaner portion of the equasion.
Likewise, I assumed the hot air above the motor would be a big negative expecially with all of the Hoopla over today's snorkle systems drawing in cool air for increased HP.
I removed all of mine in favor of looks....
But then again, I'm so vain they probally think this car is about me I'm sooo vain...........

KEVIN, DO YOU HAVE AN AIR CLEANER YOU WANT TO USE? IF NOT I HAVE A CHROME ONE, 14" THAT MIGHT WORK. IT CAME WITH MY ZZ4 AND I DON'T THINK IT WILL WORK FOR ME. SO DON'T GO OUT AND BY ONE JUST YET.

Thanks for those answers!
Yeah, looks are important too, as long as I'm not screwin' it up. And I would'nt mind a bit more noise at all.
DaveM,
That's mighty generous! I'll take it! (Dinner is on me when we meet up in Pa.)
Here is why they helped emissions.
The snorkel units have a heat stove unit that attached to the exhaust manifolds. Hot air from around the manifolds would travel up to the air cleaner and blend with the cold air from outside.
By having heated air on a cold engine (exhaust manifolds warm up very fast) the choke could be set a bit leaner and come off a tad quicker. This reduced emissions on engine warm up.
Without the set up, you may need to richen the choke pulloff a tiny bit, and delay the choke opening, again a tiny bit.
With that done, you won't notice anydifference other that a slight increase in engine warm up time. Probably not enough to notice.
The cool air into a warm engine will make it perform a bit better. Cool air is denser and as a result gets more air into the engine that hot air will. But the restriction of the duct work will usually offset the advantage, and the open mesh type will flow more without the restriction. It's usually about a toss up, and sometimes the lack of duct work actually works better.
Kevin, let me know when you need it. You will have to check to see if it fits under your hood. If it doesn't, I'll take it back and sell it.
Here's what it looks like, except with out the Bow-Tie nut.
