Why would my engine almost stall when I come to a quick stop, versus runs just fine when I come to a slow stop?

Adam, with the gas smell issue you mentioned in a different post, and this issue, I would first look at the carb. Maybe floats.

My '70 did the exact same thing when I had the original Q-Jet on it...slam on the brakes and it would stall. Check the carb, the float was bad in mine.

I agree with Owen and Matt. Rochester Q-jets have a nitril float in them. After many years these tend to get saturated with gas then sink. I would pull the carb off and get a rebuild kit w/float. These carbs are fairly easy to rebuild. Check the primary throttle shaft for any side to side play in it. If it has a lot of slop in it then you could do one of two things. Send it out to a carb. specialist and have it re-bushing, or get a new replacement Q-jet. Edelbrock make a nice Q-jet series carb. I have one on mine and no problems with it.
