alt cooling fan rattling....

the cooling fan on my alternator is rattling.. I put a alen wrench in the center and cranked it tight.... and it worked for about 1 hour. how tight do I need to get this thing? I just don't want to screw it up...

should I take it off and dom it/
the thing sound like heck ;)

You might have a bad bearing. It could well be the sound of a needed rebuilding or a replacement alternator in your future.Gunslinger2006-10-09 10:25:56

damn it.... not a pricey or hard to fix thing.. I'm just busy.....
I guess I'll put a chrome one on this winter... are they cool? ot crap?

Just put an impact gun on the nut on the pulley and take the nut off.  Then you can remove the pulley and fan.  Look for spacers under the fan.  If they are present, but worn the fan will get loose and spin.  Check for any wear patterns.  You can reinstall the nut with the impact as well.  Just give it short bursts, not a long blast.  The long blast just spins the alt.

I'd second what Ken said. When you remove pulley spin shaft to make sure bearings are ok. Use impact to tighten.
