I recently got a 1978 L82, My problem is when I try to check the power steering fluid I can't get the cap out because it hits the alt bracket. do I have the wrong bracket or am I supposed to remove it each time I check the fluid, what gives. can anybody help

Considering the car is over twenty-five years old, there's no telling what brackets could have been changed or modified over the years. What it might be is that it has the wrong belt or belts installed that are placing the power steering pump in a wrong location relative to the alternator bracket.

I have a '78 L82 and have no problem checking the power steering fluid other than it's mounted low and having to reach in. The real headache is changing the belt since that gets done from underneath for the power steering, but that's not needed so often.

You may find the power steering belt is stretched a bit.  This allows the pump to sit in a different position.  In the best of conditions the cap is a tight fit.  Try lifting it slightly, then moving it forward, then lift and tilt to get it out.  You may want to loosed the power steering pump, move it slightly inward and see if it will come out.  If so, get a new belt.  But you could have the wrong bracket.

You will find you will probably need a funnel to fill the power steering no matter what.

Found this thread when a similar question came up.
 
I have / had the same problem that gunnisonboy had on my 71 -- too hard to get the power steering cap out of the reservoir. Hits the alternator bracket. Takes a contorsionist to pull it off. Motor is an LS5 and there ain't much room for ANYTHING else there, much less my ham hands.
 
Maybe a screwed up, but . . . I lopped about 1/2 inch off the bottom of the stick, just below the FULL COLD level.  Goes in and comes out right nice now.  Just not sure whether the wheels will fall off 'cause I did that??! Rolling%20On%20The%20Floor%20Laughing
 
Anyone else have this problem?  Better fix?  Thanx.

Only problem would be if the fluid dropped below the end of your chopped stick, you wouldn't know how low it was.
So you add a little and check.
Keep doing that until the level is correct.
I think you are OK.

Try reaching under the bracket or belt  and unscrew the cap with your fingers, lift it out and push it to the left, until you do this a few times you will drop the cap. Its almost the same method in reverse to get it back in. To add fluid get a long stem oil funnel. It aint easy, been there, good luck. Gene

I just pulled all my belts off yesterday. Doing a new raditior and figured, what the heck, might as well change all that stuff so it don't bite me later on. I noticed the same thing so I pryed it father away and the cap comes off easy. Mine had a Napa 25-09153 belt, maybe it's too short????

My '74 is easiest to get out from the rear of the pump area. It will also hit on the Alt. bracket if ya try to go straight up, but, I can reach around behind the pump, under the Alt. and unscrew the cap , tilting it rearward. It ain't something ya wanna do while it's running, fer sher....

I have a 78 and even though I can get my stick out it's a wiggle-worm situation.
I noticed my Alt belt rides a little low in the pulleys so i'm gussing I have a wrong belt installed. When I get my engine detailing finished i'm taking the old belt to the parts house and get a belt that fills the pulleys and it will be slightly longer for ps pump clearance.
