Topic: Another timing Question
in Forum: C3 Engines

Hi gang!
Just recently installed an aftermarket balancer and the instructions strongly recommended installing it 10 degrees advanced.
So this is what I did. With the pointer at 10 BTDC degrees, I dropped the distrbutor in with the rotor pointing at the number 1 position. I read a few articles that dicussed this process so I believe I got that part right.
So with the vac advance line plugged I'm checking the timing and this is where I am confused - Do I need to subtract 10 degrees from the reading on the balancer since it is installed 10 degrees advanced? If so, it make sense as I would have 38 degrees total timing with 14 inital. The car is running great - just confused with the math - I'm sure this is basics for most, but first time I've done this....
Thanks as usual and Happy Memorial Day

Most balancers will only go in one way relative to the crank shaft. Did you turn the crank to get the 10 BTDC? If so, it doesn't really make any difference. Except it is easier to set the distributor in place with the engine set at the basic timing setting.
If you put the timing mark where you want initial timing and line up the dist pickup or where the points just open, the timing will be very close to start the engine without a lot of fooling around.
Set the timing as you always would.

Dr. Ken, simple words afor a sensible answer and I thank you as have many others over the hundreds forums of which you have presided!
Thanks!
