I'm just finishing up the suspension on my 68 427/390 and wanted to do some planing on the engine rebuild and was looking for some imput.
I plan on replacing the carb, intake, dist, heads? this car had 390hp new and if I end up with 400 that's all I'm looking for.
Any thoughts?

thats not aiming very high for the amount of money youll spend to replace heads and up..
how about cam ... which is more important to you..
low end torque or high end horses
If I were you, I go with a couple of 800 dominators on a tunnelram. But thats just me

Nope, gotta choose. You can get more of both, but one will be stonger than the other. And if you want a LOT of one, the other will suffer a bit.

Anything, but Stock and more mods to come!
SSBC Force 10 Brakes, 3.73, TH350, 355 CID, Rack and Pinion, Vette Brakes suspension front and rear.
I would choose torque mainly because torque is what makes the car go down the road.
I would look at a top end kit. Brodix, Dart, Edelbrock, Trick Flow, Holley and others have kits that are all mapped out that should make good power for the money.

Be very sure what you want out of your engine and how you intend to drive it. The previous owner of my '69 427/435 installed an L88 cam when he rebuilt the motor and it's barely civilized for the street. Very low engine vacuum and a very lopey idle. The spec sheet for the cam show its power band from 4400-7000 rpm's...I don't even drive it that fast to get the most out of the engine. I will say that when it passes 4000 rpm's you can really feel the power building up. What is nice is how people complain about ceiling tiles falling when I drive by.
Buy a camshaft with a useful power band for the type of driving you will do.

i agree with aftershark and gunslinger..
unless your planning to roadrace this thing go for torque
realistically most of us will never use a high horse cam on the street.. now on the strip its another matter..
one more question i need to ask before I can give advice..
what kind of transmission/gears ?
