Welcome to the forum, timgman...
one of the best Vette-related purchases I've made recently was the late,
great John Lingenfelter's book, "John Lingenfelter On Modifying Small-
Block Chevy Engines". I'm currently reading it, and I just happen to be on
the chapters about heads, and head modifications, for Mouse motors.
If you get the book, I think you'll also find that he offers a hell of a lot of
very practical, specific information and advice about these engines. It's
easily one of the best sources of knowledge about SB's that I've come
across. I've learned more about these engines in a few nights than I have
reading all the enthusiast magazines and (other!) Corvette internet sites.
So I'd strongly encourage you to get a copy and see what he has to say
about small blocks--and to be more precise about your question, the
pros and cons of various stock and aftermarket heads for these engines.
Me personally, I'm planning on AFR's...based upon The Master's advice!

[QUOTE=timgman] I suppose I should add that I want the car fairly streetable and do not want to impede on the longevity of my 350.
thanks again guys and gals.

still need more info about what you want to do.. and if youre going to pull the heads and do something with them.. youll be much happier with a real cam as well..
in fact i would venture to say that getting a cam, heads and intake would be your best bet.
what is your budget for this?
cast iron? aluminum?
again.. streetable is very subjective..
top end, bottom end, good mix??
I suppose that getting in the 260 - 275 hp range would be enough to make me happy. I mean the things not THAT bad stock ;)
but I guess that we all want MORE AND MORE ;)
but realy, 260 - 275 should make me happy.
I'm silling to spend what it takes... (the less the better) ...yep I know .. "speed cost money....."
hehehehe
thanks and this is a great welcome to your cool forum. ;)
A good mix of top and bottom end is what would be best I suppose ;)

A little elbow grease will help if you don't want to spend the bucks. Clean up the castings on the runners on the heads and intake. Port match the intake and exausts to the heads. Maybe a set of headers. Shortys if you want the bottom end torque and long tube if you want more top end. A mild cam with an rpm rating of 1000 or so to about 5000 or something like that. A good tune up by a reputable mechanic would be a plus, bolt ons alone don't help if they are not working together correctly. Find a shop with a chassis dyno and they will help you tune the carb and timing and get the peak performance for a few bucks as well. Just a little .02 to get you thinking .

you know, just tweaking the timing and and recurving the distributor can really wake up your l-48! i have a completely stock l-48 and after adding a re-curve kit and advancing the timing, i had a solid seat of my pants difference. total spent: 40 bucks on plugs, wires and curve kit
yessir, some good advice, the timing is off.. and I've never owned a car that "had" a distributor hehehe
