Help! had my wife behind me today when driving my '75 (fresh rebuild on 350), soo, i decided to show her what the brakes lights look like from FAR away
When we got home, she questioned me about the "puffs" of black smoke when i stepped on the gas. Seems that it happens only under a major throttle depression. I did do enough research here to realize that its just gas through the carb. Now, how do i get it to stop? Is this something that a basic only ability mechanic can do, or do i head to the local Chevy dealer? Oh, if its important, the carb is cleaner than a whistle, as if new also (cant reach the seller to find out if it is). can anybody recommend a place where i can read on how to adjust them? I am very good at following directions.... Thanks all! d.

If it is just when you are accelorating , then it may be that the accelorator pump needs to be adjusted. Holley's are easy to adjust. What kind of carb and what size is it?

My apoligies, it is a Holly, (if there is more details needed i would need help to identify exactly. I just have never worked on Carbs) and yes, i did read the thread, thats why i knew that it was unburnt fuel. Just dont know how to adjust it, or if it takes a mechanic.

Sounds like it's running a bit rich.
Try this link. This is an excellent tuning paper on Holley Carbs:

I got the impression from the quick read I did on it the accelerator pump (if rich) will give a momentary puff of black smoke. If the smoke continues the problem could be jetting.

I tried searching that site for the same type of article for a Quadrajett. Anyone have a link or some instructions on how to tune/adjust?
