I was at a swap meet today and I broke down and bought an engine. I have said in past posts that was gonna build a 383 stroker. Well I found a deal I couldnt resist. I bought a 358 (350 bored .040) and even though it wont have the torque, it should do nicely. I also scored trickflow heads along with it. My question is the cam I got with it. It is a comp cams 270H (224o int. ,224o exh @.470 lift). This is my first engine build up so any input on the cams charateristics would be appreciated. What I am looking for is a engine to daily drive, good street ablity, 400 horse 400 torque (if possible) under 6000 rpm. the compression should be a tad under 10:1. If any you guys got a better cam suggestion I'm all ears. The torque converter is not purchased yet so thats not a concern. the trans will be a 700r4. the carb and intake are not bought yet either. sorry for the length of the post. Thanks guys!

I would contact Comp Cams and ask them. Give them the cam specs and what you what out of the engine and they'll be more than happy to tell you if that cam will do what you want or what cam of theirs is better suited for your purposes. Edelbrock, Crane, Summit Racing and others can do the same for you.

I agree that contacting Comp Cams would be your best bet. I did the same thing and found them very helpful. Didn't wind up with a "bottom of the page" version that hurts streetability. Went with an Xtreme Energy 256 and 1.6 ratio Comp roller rockers to get the lift to .477/.484. Dyno showed 378 hp and 414 ft-lbs from a 355 ci at 9.35 compression. Nice slight exhaust rumble. Mine is a '73 painted pearl orange. Cops can see me coming, figured they didn't need to hear me as well. Suggest you also talk to Comp about a torque convertor. They bought TCI about 1 1/2 years ago and have recently introduced a line of convertors to match their Xtreme Cams. After talking with one of Comp's engineers, he suggested a XE 268 to go with my 256 cam. I am really pleased. It has an advertised stall of 1800 rpm but the engineer said it would stall at least 200-300 higher with my combination. I know brake torqueing isn't the correct way to gauge the stall, but with the original convertor I couldn't get past 1600-1700. With the Comp convertor I get to 2400 and then the tires just start smoking. Really cool and impresses the daylights out of the rice burners when they realize that both tires are leaving rubber. Also, Comp sold me the convertor directly. Said $275 was normal price but I got it for $223 right from them. Hope this helps. Good Luck!
