Has any one upgraded their Points type distributor to electronic or breakerless ingnition. If so how does it run. What if any advantage is there to Mallory or MSD units?

Hi Pozz ,making a switch to a breakerless ignition is win win proposition . All of the units out there are good and provide maintenanc free ignition operation . There is no need for you to consider the expense of msd type ignitions unless you are running some extreme mods . I run a somewhat crazy type of induction system and installed the msd as it was a necessity . Check out jegs or one of the other suppliers for a unit that will allow you to make the switch with a minimum of effort . BTW follow the MFG instructions closely concerning good wiring practices and grounds etc. I hope this answers some of your questions ,,,,,,,, if not lets hear from you !

Hello,
I have had the pertronics system for three years. When it is working, it works great. However, I have had to replaced it once before, and am having intermittant problems again. I will be buying the unit offered by Lectric Limited when the Pertronics unit finally fails completely.

I used the Unilite system from Mallory without any problems.

I think Performance Distributors HEI is the way to go. They custom calibrate the distributor to your engine conbination, size, cam, weight, etc, unlike over the counter or catologe dists. I run one on my alky fueled dirt modified and it works great.I just bought one for my vett, not installed yet.Tach drive is 525.00, non tack drive 295.00, free cat 901-396-5782,www.performancedistributors.com Good Luck

I just bought a GM HEI until from a newer Vette... I want to say 75. But my 74 was the last year they had manual tach-drive, and the new HEI unit didn't have it. So if you're going to switch over to HEI, $200 extra for the tach-drive is essential if you want your tachometer to work (if you have a tach-drive now that is)... However, it might be cheaper to upgrade your tachometer with a 1975+ tach, which apparently look the same except it's white instead of green lettering which is supposed to be quite unnoticeable.

If you are handy and want the stock look for the gauges (you will definately see the difference from pre-74 to post-74) you may be able to switch the mechanisms. I have heard of this being done.
