Hey Guys new member here. I've got a problem. 383 Stroker I picked up used and, I'm running it on a homemade stand. I let it set awhile and got crap in carb so I cleaned it out and, its a little hard to start. I went to start it the started nose broke off. My plan is to just swap the nose if I can find one. What causes this to happen never a issue till now? What can I check? It did seem to kick back a bit when it happened. Also it is shimmed. Thanks in advance for any help.

Too much initial timing is the usual suspect when the starter nose shears off. A misfire while cranking can also cause it to kick-back.
What kind of compression ratio does this engine have, do you know? You might want to consider using a mini-starter.
You can certainly just replace the nose, but you have to be certain to get the correct one, as there are several variations, depending on flywheel size/teeth count, and bolt pattern.

I've never had a starter break like that before. Looking for a cause. All I know stroked 4 bolt roller lifters with some camel backs . Was running on my stand till carb got crap in it so I cleaned it out now I need it to start so I can set carb back .

I've seen plenty of them break. It's possible that there was fuel in a cylinder that fired at the wrong time, or created a hydro-lock situation. Hard to say specifically what happened at that time in your case.
If you haven't already, I would suggest removing all the plugs and cranking the engine over to be sure there is no raw fuel in the cylinders before trying to fire it off next time, once you get the starter repaired/replaced. Make sure the firing order and timing is correct, of course, and that the #5 & #7 plug wires are separated all along the way to the plugs.

Does your engine have the small brace that mounts on the end of the starter and to the side of the block? If you don’t have one of these braces it will break the noses off starters frequently.
Hope this helps!
