Topic: Cam and Vacuum
in Forum: C3 Engines
Well the more I learn, the more I learn I don't know. I currently have the original L82 cam which seems to be a decent cam based on discussions with cam manufacturers.
The cam selection is tough. I like the Lunati Voodoo series but the 60102 seems less than my current L82 and the 60103 is a little more. Either of these could work but I would like a little more muscle car sound so I am leaning towards the 60103 (268/276, 227/233, 489/504, 110/106).
Question: Is anyone running this cam? If so, what is your vacuum at idle? I want to be sure I will not have problems with the power brake booster and headlights.
Also, is anyone using an electric vacuum pump to supplement vacuum?

I have the 60102. It provides excellent vacuum, and the car uses the stock torque converter. Very slight lumpy idle, very slight.
But that does not answer the question of the 60103. I would expect a noticable lumpy idle. Vacuum will be lower, but fairly decent. If you have a 3.08 diff and an automatic, this would be very poor at launch. With the next diff up, and/or a standard shift you may be very happy with the 60103. Granted I never had one of those running but from what I know that's my best guess.
So the 60102 mild lope but good vac and good lower end performance and good launch with 3:08?
The 60103 noticable lope but must change the rear gears to 3:55 or 3:79 and add a stall converter (2000 or 2400) to get a decent launch and low end performance? maybe that is also what is wrong with the feeling of the current L82 cam.

Vacuum should not be a problem with all your accesories as long as you have a functional vacuum reserve tank. It's there to build up a vacuum reserve so you can shut your lights etc even if the car is not running. It will only work once or twice but that's why it's there and to give you constant vacuum for all the accesories while the engine is running. It won't effect the advance on the distributor (if you are using vacuum advance) as even a lumpy cam won't change the vacuum at low revs enough to move the advance diaphragm quickly.
That's my quarter's worth.
I believe my vacuum tank is working fine, so that should be a help.
I found an article in a previous CHP magazine that featured a build with the Yoodoo 60103. It didn't reference the part number but the specs were the same. They said it turned some heads in the shop and the cam sounded radical! no notes on vacuum. The build made 411HP and 437TQ with TQ over 380 from 2600RPM and up.
If a cam likes a 2400 stall, does that mean it will be a problem during general driving conditions around town with an automatic?

Bernie,
I have a 2600 stall and I can sit at stop lights idling at around 900 RPM.
