I have owned my '79 for almost a year now and am mystified that I can't check the power steering fluid level without loosening a belt. Am I missing something? Is there an easier way? It seems that the alternator blocks access to the power steering pump. I can't remove the dipstick without moving something else first.
What's the secret folks?

I am going to give this a shot. I use to own a '79, and if I remember correctly if you have an older alternator belt that has stretched over time, the alternator has to be moved to provide the right belt tension. A some point the alternator gets in the way of checking the PS fluid level. You might try buying a new belt.
Hope this is helpful!

On my 1980, it is a total pain in the a** to do also.

I have a similar problem on my 72 small block. Couldn't check the PS level with all the belts on, etc. I finally took the alternator and other stuff off so I could look at the PS reservoir. I then took a screwdriver and made a mark on it for the proper level. Now, with all of the components in place, I simply lift the PS reservoir lid and slip my screwdriver down there to measure the level. It is my new dipstick. Crude, but it works. Go figure, Mr. Goodwrench! The funny thing is that there are others out there with identical cars and options and SOME can get there cap off, while others can't.
