I went out for a short cruise and needed to get towed home.. not good. Been running strong, going 40mph and sounded like a miss then just shut off and would not restart. Confusing Observations: She seems to crank much faster now than normal. At first when I checked the fuel at the carb it seemed to be almost spitting up out of the carb as I cranked. Later while waiting for the tow, I tried again and it seemed like no fuel was coming out of the jets and a tapping noise in the front pass lower side of engine (near fuel pump area). Later when home, fuel squirts when I press the accelerator. So, fuel seems OK. I also tried putting a couple ounces into the carb, no start. I have HEI so not as easy to check for spark. I put my timing light on #1 and cranked, no light = assume no spark. I opened up the distributer cap and it looked in need of changing and also the plastic radio capacitor/harness wire connectors were all broken into pieces? So, I changed the rotor, cap, HEI module, and radio capacitor/harness inside, still no spark ( no light using timing light). I checked the coil and the secondary side to ground showed open loop so I changed the coil to an ACCEL high energy coil. Still no spark. I checked the brown wire in at the BAT side of the distributor and good 12V to the distributor, so I am confused??? No spark out of the distributor?? What am I missing????

Did you try cranking it over with the distributor cap off to check for movement.

No, and mine has never been replaced (110K miles). Do they break like the belts or just get loose? You may be on to something. Any easy way to check?

You guys are good! Thanks for the fast response and thanks Jim for calling me.

Bad news.... Engine cranks but no movement of the rotor. So I guess that means timing chain broke or smooth cam? Considering that I am not a mechanic is this something I can tackle with a 100 piece craftsman set? I guess it is possible that if the belt broke I may have smashed some valves too...... any easy way to assess the extent of the damage?

pull distributor cover off and see if rotor is turning when you are cranking it. You might not have compression because you bent some push rods, broke valves, etc. If that timing chain did go, you for sure have some other problems. Valves stop and pistons moving = problems.

Timing chain, definitely.

My first guess was timing chain before I read the replies...And yes, you could have bent ALL the valves. Same thing happened to my son in his '61 p/u with a 350. His was very strange....usually the cam gear gets rounded off. His was the crank gear. I had never seen this before and talking to mechanics where  I work, no one else had seen that before either. We also found a rounded lobe on the cam and quite a few bent push rods. So by the time we were done with it it was new heads (I kept the double hump 202's he had), cam lifters and timing set.

I would pull the valve covers too and spin the motor over and see if all the rockers are working corrrectly.  You may also find a rocker arm or two off the tips of the valves. But look on the bright side....if it needs all this you can make some good changes to the engine for performance enhancement...If you do it yourself, look to spend around $600.00 (well I am cheap) I got the cam/lifter set from PAW (right down the street from me, but available mail order from most magazines), used the 350hp 327 cam, the PAW in house cam with these specs runs under $100.00 with lifters. Double roller timimg set is about $30.00, and a complete ROL gasket set is about $25.00. Figure you'll spend at least $300.00 on the heads at your local machine shop or you could get a set ready to go through one of the magazine ads for as low as $325.00 plus shipping.

We spent about $500.00 on my sons truck (PAW is local so I didn't have shipping charges) and the 350hp 327 cam has a nice lope and makes great power( and does great burn-outs!).

Just some food for thought....good luck and yes you can do it with your 100 piece Craftsman tool set but you are also going to need a harmonic balancer puller and a gear puller for the crank gear. You can usually borrow them for free at some of the chain auto parts stores.
