You guys are good! Thanks for the fast response and thanks Jim for calling me.
Bad news.... Engine cranks but no movement of the rotor. So I guess that means timing chain broke or smooth cam? Considering that I am not a mechanic is this something I can tackle with a 100 piece craftsman set? I guess it is possible that if the belt broke I may have smashed some valves too...... any easy way to assess the extent of the damage?

pull distributor cover off and see if rotor is turning when you are cranking it. You might not have compression because you bent some push rods, broke valves, etc. If that timing chain did go, you for sure have some other problems. Valves stop and pistons moving = problems.

My first guess was timing chain before I read the replies...And yes, you could have bent ALL the valves. Same thing happened to my son in his '61 p/u with a 350. His was very strange....usually the cam gear gets rounded off. His was the crank gear. I had never seen this before and talking to mechanics where I work, no one else had seen that before either. We also found a rounded lobe on the cam and quite a few bent push rods. So by the time we were done with it it was new heads (I kept the double hump 202's he had), cam lifters and timing set.
I would pull the valve covers too and spin the motor over and see if all the rockers are working corrrectly. You may also find a rocker arm or two off the tips of the valves. But look on the bright side....if it needs all this you can make some good changes to the engine for performance enhancement...If you do it yourself, look to spend around $600.00 (well I am cheap) I got the cam/lifter set from PAW (right down the street from me, but available mail order from most magazines), used the 350hp 327 cam, the PAW in house cam with these specs runs under $100.00 with lifters. Double roller timimg set is about $30.00, and a complete ROL gasket set is about $25.00. Figure you'll spend at least $300.00 on the heads at your local machine shop or you could get a set ready to go through one of the magazine ads for as low as $325.00 plus shipping.
We spent about $500.00 on my sons truck (PAW is local so I didn't have shipping charges) and the 350hp 327 cam has a nice lope and makes great power( and does great burn-outs!).
Just some food for thought....good luck and yes you can do it with your 100 piece Craftsman tool set but you are also going to need a harmonic balancer puller and a gear puller for the crank gear. You can usually borrow them for free at some of the chain auto parts stores.
