Good question. Yes it does help quite a lot. But from very high RPM stalling can still happen. But in neutral it's not as likely.

As far as helping in the winter, I highly recommend it. The rear wheel keep trying to make the front ones slide on a RWD, and the front want to drag sliding rears on a FWD. The brakes on the driving axle need to overcome driving torque befoe the tires start to brake. The non driving axle starts braking right away. In very slick conditions it make a HUGE difference.
